looking to buy a LS1 car?

theres a local dealer in the area that has a 98 Z28 M6 car that has 105K miles on it. My question is when he started it up it has a ticking sound coming from the top of the motor. Oil pressure stays around 50 idling at operating temperture. They are only asking 5500 for it just wondering if that is a good deal with the motor noise. I have always heard that LS1 have piston slap but is it that noticable? Also is there a way that you can tell if the miles are true because looking at the clutch pedal it is really worn?

thanks
Josh

im not an expert with piston slap but seeing you have a lt1, are you looking at the ls1 because you really want one or something wrong with your car? a lot you can do to your car for the differance of trade in value.

yes...piston slap can be that noticable.

does the sound go away after the car warms up?? if not than it may be something else like a lifter or air check valve.

maybe have a shop do a compression and leak down test on it.

LS1 for a daily driver is the best thing you can do. My SS averages 28 mpg on long trips and around 16-17 in the city. They are so great I have 2 and will add a LS2 GTO or new Camaro to my driveway also

well after it warmed up it was still making the noise. But the owner turned it off and started it back up and it went a way for a little while and then it came back. He said that it don't always do it.

Thanks
Josh

You mentioned that it was at the local dealer, and then you mention something about the "owner" started it up. Which is it? I.e, if it is for sale by a local "used car dealer" ----bend over.

There is a reason why the car is for sale at a used car lot---and I doubt it is because it is cherry.

If you want an LS1, I suggest you look around for the best deal on the best car. In alternative, if you don't care what kind of condition the thing is in, then go to an auction and pick one up as a project car. JMHO

Ha Ha BUBBA. Yeah it is at a car lot but it was the owner of the car lot that was showing it to me. As far as condition it is in pretty good shape to be 9 years old. I was just curious because I have always heard that alot of LS1 cars have a ticking noise. By all means I am not jumping on the first one I see I just thought I would get a little information on what to look for.

that price seems a little low side for an asking price? just did some clciking around online and the reatail for 105K on a 98Z28 is more like 7K and then some higher... so I would use caution and rember if it sounds to good to be true it probably is

Car dealers, even small used ones buy cars at auction all the time. I bought my 01 WS6 from a used lot for 12K cash. So far stuff HAS ! gone out on it, but nothing they could know about. O2 sensor, wheel bearing made a little noise so I replaced it (5K after I bought it I noticed it). I had to do the fuel pump but they payed for all but $30 of the pump b/c they told me about it during the sale.

Point is, its a great and solid car and only has 78K on it right now. love it, black/black M6 01 WS6, couldnt be happier (well, if it was a C5 or a C5 z, lol).

If it's an M6 car it could be bent pushrods, that is pretty common cause all it takes is one blown shift. `98's are not known for having a piston slap problem.
I have 113k with no piston slap ever but I have bent a few push rods. their easy to replace.

Top end noise isn't that uncommon, as said get a leak down done and you should be fine.
