Long Tubes??
Long Tubes??
I was under my car two days ago (doing the wire mod and changing the oil) and noticed my ORY is bolted pretty high up to my stock headers. It looks like I can't get LT unless I take the y pipe to get refabricated at a shop. It looks like I can only fit shorties or mids at the most for the current set up....is this true??? I want LT so I hope not. I can snap pics if I make no sense.

but to use a y-pipe that fits your stock exhaust manifolds, you would most likely have to get shorties to work with that y-pipe. unless maybe, you could get mid-lengths and be able to fab the y-pipe just a little to work with 'em...i wouldn't know for sure though....
i hear that the ls1 exhaust manifolds flow pretty d*mn well for stock manifolds and that switching to some new shorties won't actually net that much gain. i haven't actually seen any dyno's proving how little that might be....just what i've heard.

That's true for 00-02 but not for 98-99 their tubular manifolds suck.

thanks for clearin it up.

i argue with many people on the subject of shorties. they do cost alot. however they are legal because they don't move the cats. you also should include high flow cats and y pipe to make a fair comparison to long tubes. the manufacturers claim 11 flywheel (thats both jba & edelbrock,i called them) horse gain from shorties probably 8 rwhp. plus add 9 for cats & y pipe according to random tech. long tubes will gain 20 to 25. when you make major changes pcm tuning is advised for maximum gain! good luck with your choice.
i'm with DANO on this one.
the LT vs shortie comparison is skewed.
LT's and the required ypipe gain you a solid 20hp
now the shorties ALONE will probably gain you 8-10hp, but that is still with the stock Ypipe.
combine a set of shorties AND an orp to that and you'd pick up probably a solid 15hp...
not a bad compromise to maintain the option to switch back to emissions legal in a few hours. and you won't (shouldn't) have the clearance problems.

It might be worth the few extra ponies to buy the 00-02 manifolds off someone who switched to long tubes if you could pick it up for like 50 bucks. 5 horsepower for 50 bucks isnt too bad.
