Question Long tube headers: FLP vs. SLP

I want to install a set of longtube headers on my '02 SS and am trying to decide between SLP and FLP. The one thing that pulls me to SLP is that they claim to be tuned lengths that create an exhaust vacuum, and hence more power. Anyone have experience with these? Thoughts?

FLPs have several quality issues...
The link is to one of many.
I have heard of no issues with SLPs, they are harder to install though.

I have heard that SLP have ground clearence problems. I would suggest the Hooker Long tubes. My freind has them on his 02 Firehawk and it was a night and day difference. He dynoed the car before them and is getting it dynoed tommorow. I will post the numbers then

That's a gain of 35hp at the crank. Not too shabby! But how would the FLP and SLPs compare? I am considering lowering the car with an Eibach Pro Kit and will need to know about ground clearance. I want Long Tubes but if I get the SLPs or Hookers will I run into ground scraping problems?

If I have to get the FLPs, how are they?

Thumbs up

Well I've done a tone of research and here's what I've found: The hookers seem to be a great set of LTs, if you only want to run race pipes (no cats). For those of use that live in states like California (woo hoo!) that require smog every 2 years, it's necessary to have a set-up that allows for easy switching back and forth from race pipes to cats and back. FLP is the easiest to do this with but probably not the best headers for the car. T-Byrne sells the SLP set-up with optional off road pipes that aren't quite as easy to switch, but well woth the extra effort. From everyone I've talked to and everything I've read, this seems to be the best set-up in terms of quality and performance. Thanks for everybody's input

I have the SLP lt kit installed. The quality is
very high and the fit was perfect. The kit
had everything I needed to install.
Here is how I did the install.

to get additional clearance you can rotate
the cat brackets 90 degrees and gain 1" each side.
I have had these installed for 11 months and
I have no regrets.

Cool, but, has anyone installed these on a lowered car? I don't like stock ride height.

I agree with what the others are saying.

The SLPs have clearance issues on lowered cars, you need to investigate this before going with them. I have read and heard this numerous times, I believe SLPs hang quite low compared to other LT headers. I have also been seen and read several accounts that some SLP installs simply don't make the power that they should. I know a person locally that removed his stainless SLPs because he lost power compared to short tube headers he had on before! He sold the SLPs and went with FLPs and gained the power he wanted. This was a couple of years ago though, so maybe SLP has resolved whatever issue they had. They are also a difficult install, I believe you have to unbolt the tranny and jack it up to get the headers in there... or was it remove a motor mount? I cant recall for sure, I just remember it was a much bigger pain than TTS or FLP. SLPs are stainless steel, which is a big plus in my book, it's too bad that they have a bad reputation in other areas.

In comparison FLP and TTS are much easier to install, and tuck in more than SLPs.

I believe FLPs are the best for a lowered car, they apparently tuck up very high, although this has apparently resulted in some banging against the underside of the car (by the headers and exaust) on bumpy roads. They are also supposed to have the easiest install of all the LTs. They also come with the easily swappable cats and offroad pipes, a great benefit. This might also be why they are reported to make some of the best power gains of the long tubes as well... On the downside FLP has the chasis banging problem (is that resolved yet?), and reportedly has had quality (reports of rusting?) and or supply problems recently that caused some distributors to stop carrying them.

TTS are also highly regarded, like FLP previously. They have an easy install (but you have to pound on the firewall with a hammer before installing them, so they aren't as easy an install as the FLPs), but the driver's side hangs slightly lower than FLP but then again you have no banging problems either. They are made of extremely thick metal that will surely not warp like some headers have been known to do. They make excellent power, and the new catalytic converters that ship with them now flow much better than their previous ones that flowed poorly. They do NOT come with offroad pipes, nor are they setup for their use. In my local Fbody club everyone seems to be going with TTS due to the extremely high quality and the easy install, and the ability to lower the car with the headers too.

I defintely recommend the TTS if your budget will allow them. http://www.tbyrnemotorsports.com/ sells them.
