Leave 2.73 car in 2nd (1/4 mile)?
Not that I need to know until next year, but does anyone with the 2.73 rearend put the car in second to run. My car shifts in to 3rd at about 96 or 97 mph and this is just before the traps. I plan BFG DRs for next year and they are a little taller (255/50/16) further killing my gear and the RPM calculator says that I can run 2nd gear to 109 (6200/rev limit).
My question is what is the best way to do this? Do you launch in D and then drop i to second after the shift so it holds there? Or should I just manually shift into 2nd.
It seems like this unnecessary shift to 3rd has to hurt my times.
Sorry so long

I would not run in second no matter what. Your car will not shift into third even if you run in D. Plus if you run in 2nd you risk bouncing off the rev limiter. I'm no expert but I would not do it.
Unfortunately, I tried leaving my car in 2nd one time, and it didn't gain me anything.....................................I started in 1st, then shifted to 2nd just after 5000RPM (~5200RPM
so the transmission actually shifted around ~6000RPM instead of 5800RPM) and then I just held it in 2nd all the way to the end of the track, but I think that pretty much right at the 1/4 mile line, the car hit the rev-limiter, but I didn't want to back off just yet incase I wasn't 100% over the line, but then I shifted into 3rd, and since these trannies react so slow, it took forever to shift (and YES, I had backed off the gas at this point, but still the motor is now acting as an engine brake and is revving over 5000RPM
)...............................so, long story short, I usually just run in Drive, and I got my best time that way (which was a shabby 14.008 @ 102.99mph
). Next year though, I'm planning on switching to 3.73's (maybe 3.42's) but I think I just want to go all out to get the best 1/4 mile time I can............then, once the car is out of warranty & has higher mileage on it?? STROKER!!!!!
