Kids from my school track time

There is this kid at my school, he has a 98 z-28, all options. We always talk ls1's in english. Anyway, we get to talking about mods and he has a ****load of them. This is what he has
FIPK
Granatelli(sp) Mass air sensor
BBK throtle body
Hypertech chip
Hooker long tubes
off road y-pipe
magnaflow muffler

His one and only track time was a 13.8 @ 102 with 2.2 60 ft. time. It is an a4 with 3.23's, and yes I did look under his hood for the mods, and they were there. Isnt that time really slow. I told him to get his car checked out cuase a m6 with those mods should be 12.7-12.9. maybey he just cant drive

Granatelli(sp) Mass air sensorcould help or hurt its very hit and miss
BBK throtle bodywith almost no mods I dont see this as helping any
Hypertech chip they dont make chips for our cars.. at least none that I knew of...
Hooker long tubessome gain
off road y-pipesome gain
magnaflow mufflersome gain

How does someone only have 1 run at the track? I wont ever understand that.

There isnt much to "driving" with an auto.. its all in the launch then you just hold the gas down. I thik his times are fine. with .2 off of his short times he would be at mid 13's so thats about right.

I would say that is quite slow actually. I don't know why people automatically think M6s are faster than autos...

He should at least be at low 13s. 102 is pretty low for the mph catagory. What altitude are you guys at?

With the larger MAF and throttle body, my guess is that he will be running pretty lean too. Definatly have it checked it out.

We are at 700 feet. they do make a hypertech for our cars, check ls1 speed. And when did I say that autos are slower, they are basically even. I was just using the m6 with those mods as a referance to how fast he should be. Im thinking he suld be around 13.00 @ 107,108

As another reference, a kid at my school with 2000 ss, slp lid, Mass air sensor and loudmouth runs a 13.3 @ 106. That is a m6, all options

Exclamation

What were the conditions like for his "one and only" run?? IMO, the weather (temp, humidity, baro pressure, etc) have a lot more to do with how cars run than we'd like to believe. Case in point: MY CAR..........ran 14.008 @ 102.99 last year, and 13.434 @ 105.80 this year, with no real changes, other than it was hot and humid as hell last year, and nice and cool when I ran 13.4 (yet my 60' time wasn't any better?!).

Maybe your friend needs to practice the launch, and maybe the conditions were no good. HOWEVER, I'm not a big advocate for "little things" like MAF's, TB's, etc., unless the engine is a hi-po engine that needs a lot more air than what it already gets. Headers should give a definite advantage, but I don't buy into the smaller things on a stock car.

Oh well.............at least he got a 13.xxx on his first run!

All the little things add up

He should be running better, but he needs more than one run to compare.

Just to clarify.. the "Hypertech" addon is a programmer not a "CHIP"..

thats what I was wondering about since you said he had a chip...

As stated earlier, weather has a huge effect on how a car performs. My best run was a 12.98, 2 months later couldn't get under a 13.4. A year later, and 7 rwhp more added, I couldn't get under a 13.2

M6's are faster than A4's because of the gear ratios. A4= 2.73 or 3.23, M6=3.42. The 3.42 gears make them faster. stock vs. stock, manual IS faster.

Thumbs down

IMO something isn't right. The long tubes and Y are worth at least 20 rwhp, the muffler about 5 rwhp and the CAI about 10 rwhp. He should be at least close to a 12 second run with around a 108-110 trap. My guess is the sucky Hypertech programming.

He just needs to practice. His "one and only run" ?

My very first time at the track in my WS6, I pulled a whopping 14.0. By the time the night was over, I was pulling 13.3's.

Hypertech program+GMAF+BBKTB = lean/KR ... I would bet he's pulling at least 3*KR ...
