Question K&N FIPK, is it worth the $

This item sells for about $340. It advertises that you can gain up to 30 hp. Does anyone here have this item, and can you tell me if I should buy it or just keep my Whisper air intake.

I have it and love it!
Throttle response shot up as well as overall performance. It basically brought the engine to life!
Here's I think what you should hear though. Everyone that has it will say it's worth it, and everyone that has a lid will probably say its a waste of money while sucking in hot engine air...etc. I would say its worth it and I think I've seen the FIPK as low as 300 now.

why doesnt anyone just pony up the $ and test it? find out once and for sure to know if it is worth the $$.. I found out yesterday that paper filters were better..

i've heard good things about them too and the stealth air box is the same way its way bigger than the stock and requires alot larger filter i though they were both pretty close in hp output.. and how are paper filters better!?

The FIPK is probably the most horsepower you can get from an intake. Much more than a lid and filter or anything like that. Combined with ram air the FIPK made a huge difference in throttle response and pickup at the upper end. You really feel the difference in power upwards of 90 mph.

No taking anything away from you, but I refuse to believe that "FEEL" equals anything.. I prefer hard numbers.. REPEATABLE numbers at that! If it makes 315 and backs it up with another 315 +/- 2 then it may be consistant..

Again.. I just am sick and tired of all this "guessing" and I wish more people would just do a test on a dyno and find out once and for sure!

I have the K&N FIPK aswell. Like the other guy said the throttle response is awsome and you will really like the way it sounds when you open it up. I picked mine up for $290.00 from a local parts store. Check around a few places I believe I have seen them on the net for like 299.00 or so.

Ditto. Since I already have a lid and aftermarket filter (which seems to be the baseline these days), I'd only be interested in hearing the comparison from folks who have had both setups, and could back it up with before/after dynos and timeslips (on a consistent A4). I'm dynoing on the 18th. If someone sends me one, I'll compare it *shrug* But any of this 'Oh, the PCM needs time to learn, you have to put 500 miles on it to get the best gains' BS won't cut it. Perhaps someone at the Dyno Day will have one I can swap on to compare as well - but they seem to be fairly uncommon. Hmm, I have the FTRA, the swap might not be that quick...

Re: the paper filter - It's ironic that you did that test. I was contemplating switching back to the paper filters a few months ago because I seemed to recall reviews that said the paper filters flowed better, but for a shorter period of time since their media became clogged easier.

Just comes down to product availability. I'm not willing to pay $300+ for the product, plus shipping both ways, plus a possible restocking fee, plus more $$$ for additional dyno pulls for something I don't believe is any better than an aftermarket lid/filter. Too bad it couldn't be picked up locally.

If someone has it there and it makes a documented gain of at least 5-6RWHP over a aftermarket lid&filter, I'll admit that it's better. But I won't pay $300 for that type of gain over my current setup. More than 15RWHP? Then it's a possibility.

As above, if someone there happens to have one on their car I'll attempt to arrange something. I'm not sure what needs to come off my car to install the FIPK. Or, maybe it'll be easier to put my lid/filter on that car than putting the FIPK on mine *shrug*

Been there done that in 2001 ... 22rwhp gain over stock.

Several other people have done direct comparisons to lid ... typical gain is 4-7rwhp over the lid.

From a performance standpoint the only thing that compares using a lid, is a lid in combo with a CAI - such as and FTRA... once you add all the components together for a CAI, you will pay more than you would for an FIPK ... by the way get it from Pace Perfomance parts for around $269-$299 depending upon sale.

Only drawback, it is damn efficient a drawing in air ... now pay attention ... when the car is static, that's not moving, it will draw down hot engine air. But as soon as the car is in motion AIT temps drop to ambient within seconds ... Fix - do the FIPK !FRA. Drop out the washer reservior and the shroud underneath it AIT temps will rise at an average rate of about a 1* per minute on a static car ... track results .... 12.1@112.8 for an all bolt on car.

By the way there has been no recorded incident of hrydrolock with an FIPK, as opposed to some of the CAI systems.

Good Luck

If you would like to see written results of the dyno pulls I had (lid/ftra//holley powershot) vs Stealth airbox assembly click 'FIND MORE" and check out the "BEST mod going"post.
