i'd like to see somehwere between 550 and 600 out of this motor. what would be the most cost effective way to achieve that?

I'm assuming you mean "fly wheel HP". If so, bore and stroke to around 427 CI, get a big cam, and some stage 3 heads. This will put you in the FWHP range you are looking at. If you want RWHP, do the same and add the No2.

Did you buy a complete short block? I'm not sure if the LS-1 crank will work or not. If you are going to stroke it, the stroker kit you buy will come with a forged crank, rods, piston etc... As for heads, It just depends on the amount of money you have to spend. MTI, Absolute Speed, and GTP are a few of the best.

MTi uses a 4.060 bore and a 4.125 stroke to equate 427 CI. They sell the short block including 6.0 block machined and assembled for around $6700. The stroker kit should be around 1/2 that.
