A.I.R. Pump system

What does thois system actually do? I was reading where some guy was proud of completely removing the A.I.R. Pump system like it hinders the LS1 or something. I just replaced the Secondary A.I.R. Intake Valve after throwing a code and wondered why was I doing this other then to avoid the CODE coming back in another 1800 miles.....

Its part of the emissions system, and run for about 3mins@ start-up cold, and less time after its warm and started. It help reduce Carbon monoxide & Hydrocarbons in the exhaust gasses.
It provides fresh air to the exhaust manifolds for this purpose and helps heat the Cats quicker so they can help with the overall process of eliminating harsh emissions being expelled to the atmosphere.

I really dont like the system but its for the good I guess.Mine @ cold start up is a normal tone barely hear it.But after its warmed(car) and I turn off car and start again its kinda loud and can hear it out the tail pipes. But after warmed the system isnt in open loop as long as cold so its just 45secs to 1min of annoying sound. Its pretty much going to fail one day I assume. But no codes yet.Maybe MY secondary check valves are bad I dont know.

Does anybody know if there is supposed to be a filter on the AIR pump air intake elbow on a 99 vehicle.I know the 01-02s get clean air from air box.But mine is just a rubber elbow turned down off the end of the AIR pump no filter.

On my 02 when changing the lid, the hose leading to the air box is the pump air supply so it utilizes the engine's air filter. With my direct flo they supplied a tiny filter to place in the hose.
