Question I actually gained from an aftermarket MAF?

Well, I'm somewhat confused. I've always read that aftermarket MAF's are a waste of $$$ unless your pushing over 400hp. Well, for ****s n giggles I slapped my buddies MAF on my car (his car was broken-down so we had fun with mine)

Oddly enough, I could feel a difference with the MAF installed. The only mods are those listed in my sig, plus the MAF of couse, and we even put one of those IAT plugs from SLP that bump up your timing. All that and I seriously thought I could feel a difference.

What do you guys think, was I just imagining it or is it actually possible? I'm confused. If my assumptions are correct I might have to invest in some aftermarket MAF ends.

It's possible that it gave you a noticible gain w/ the IAT you should of felt one. An aftermarket MAF is just more beneficial when pulling higher numbers

ive heard that MAFs are only a waste of $$$ on the 01-02 LS1s. SUPPOSEDLY 98-00 cars have a different fuel system as well as the other obvious differences. We're supposed to be able to see some gains from these things where they can actually hurt performance on the newer cars. not sure just what seems to be the commonly accepted opinion around here...

If your gonna get one get a Pace VV. There have been very few compliants about those. There GM calibrated so they won't screw up the a/f. The slp, gmaf and all ported ends are gonna screw up the a/f.

So is the differences in the years why I noticed a difference. My friend who owns it put it on his '02 Firehawk and said he lost power, but I put it on my 99 and gained? As far as the a/f, could it possibly only screw up 01-02 but be OK for my 99? Kinda figure that might be it since it ran alright. I don't have Autotap or anything like that though to monitor the a/f ratio. Thanks again guys.

I bought a Granatelli Z06 MAF and gained 4 hp over the stock one. My buddy with a 98 SS and SLP MAF LOST several hp with it. The dyno owner rolled his eyes when I listed the MAF as one of my mods, and was shocked when my #'s rose-he said that they finally got it right.

An aftermarket MAF could be just fine. But that's different than aftermarket or ported MAF ends.
Be very careful with screwing with the MAF on an A4 car. The computer uses the MAF readings to determine load and line pressure. Using a ported MAF or MAF ends could cause your tranny to fail prematurely. An remember that I said COULD not WOULD.
