Is Hypertech worth the money?
I have a 2000 Z28 and I want to add some more power without doing any major conversions. I was told I can get this programer for about $330 and it will give me a little more get up. If you have this mod on your car can you tell me if it's worth the power.
Noticable power? I have an automatic by the way.

I didn't feel much difference with the HPP3 "power tuning" feature, nor did I post any better 1/4 times (but that could very easily be other factors). The best thing about it is the ability set cooling fan activation points, rev limiter, shift points, and calibrate the speedo for tire height. When you're early in the mod game, it's an inexpensive way to tinker a little without paying the bucks for LS1Edit and Autotap (or Predator), which give much better results (once you learn how to use them). The latter options become a necessity to tune for max power when the mods get heavier.
Grab the big gains first: Lid, converter, drag radials, free mods, etc., then let 'er rip!

HPP3 is great if you have an A4, unlike shift kits you can change the settings when ever you want. Also great for gear changes and tire selector. The tuning is useless, mixed with other mods it will create a conflict and you'll lose power. I'm going with Predator, I will be able to customize my programs and download new ones from the internet. Edit is another way to go but expensive and hard to understand....all in all if you just end up sticking the HPP3, I'd say go for it, but get a used one. Classifieds, 150-175, don't settle for any higher.
Good luck and welcome to the board;

I have a 2001 Z28 with the Hypertech. It works ok for shift improvements in the a4 but when I got 3.73 gears it doesn't kick down as easy. In order to kick it into 2nd above 50mph you have to do it manully. From a dead stop at WOT it does work for shift RPM adjustments.
Note: At the drag strip I ran it with and without the performance tuning. I lost 1.2 mph and my ET increased 0.1 seconds with the performance tuning on. That means I lost hp using the performance tuning.
They have much better programmers on the market now that can do a lot more for you.

I've seen both sides on a dyno and at the track. Some people lose power, some people gain power. I dunno why, but that's the way things seem.
If I were you, I'd wait and pick up a used one for around the $200 mark. I used to have one before LS1 Edit, and it made things easier since I went from 2.73s to 3.73s and couldn't afford custom PCM programming at the time.
It's your call ultimately. Weigh why you need/want one versus why you'd wait for custom programming and what mods you have now/plan on having.
It'll make all the difference
