Hi everybody, first post and new to this forum. Been a member of gm-trucks.com for awhile but just bought my first F-body this weekend. Its a 1998 Z-28 and it needs a little help to make it a really nice car. I know trucks pretty well and have a 05 1500 crew cab with the 5.3. I have wanted a camaro since i was 12 and finally found one. Just wish it was a 6 speed, lol. My question is every time i start it i hear a weird noise that last a minute or two. It sounds like a really loud fuel pump whine but its coming from under the hood. It had a code on it when i bought it - p0410 which is secondary air injection. after reading the code at advance auto it went away and hasnt set again. Any ideas? Also where is a good place to get parts for these engines etc.? Thanks for any help, hope to be here for a long time.

Re: humming/buzzing noise under hood
The electric air pump runs at startup, probably what you're hearing. It's behind the driver side headlamp. As far as where to get parts, try regular parts stores 1st. e.g. I replaced an AIR check valve on my last LS1 and got it cheap at nearby AutoZone. They also stocked the belt tensioners, checked in case I ever need one.

And welcome aboard.

Yep, sounds like the air pump. Shouldn't make a lot of noise though.

Re: humming/buzzing noise under hood
mine is doing the same thing, only started after I drove through a major storm and got plenty wet. I'll have to look at the air pump and see if disabling it cures the noise.

Pull the fuse and see if that stops it.

Re: humming/buzzing noise under hood
after looking under the hood last night i found the air pump or valve in front of the drivers front tire. It looks as if somebody has screwed around with it before because it got a bunch of electrical tape around it. Would that be the code that was set- p0410 ? ( secondary air ) If that part is bad its most likly a dealer only item, great.

Re: humming/buzzing noise under hood
If you dont have to worry about emissions, just remove the AIR and delete the code.

Will this affect the drivability of the car? Will a regular code reader clear it and will it stay gone?

No, yes, no

To have the code gone for good then you'll have to have it programmed out of the PCM.

BUT... you might be able to unplug the harness from the pump and leave the (good) fuse in. It worked on Lt1s... pump disabled, no codes. All it looked for was continuity in the fuse.

I will try that tonight, i was messing around with the fuse box and saw the previous owner had a bunh of the fuse sizes screwed up so i changed some around. The air pump called for a 30 amp but all i had left was a 20 amp so i used it. Well, the car would not start because it blew the fuse. Got a 30 amp and it started so i will try leaving the fuse in and unplugging the pump. This one must be louder than other air pumps because other people ask me " whats that noise" everytime i start the car. Plus i hear it kick on as i am driving. Thanks.

Re: humming/buzzing noise under hood
Car should start with the AIR PUMP fuse missing/blown. Mine does, just sets the P0412 code. Never tried leaving it in and just unplugging the pump and seeing if the PCM reacts. Let us know.

Re: humming/buzzing noise under hood
Car will not start with out a good fuse in it for the secondary air pump. Found out the pump housing was all beat up and a new pump is about $300. I would rather find a way to program the pcm to get rid of the pump. The code it was setting was p0410- secondary air system

Sounds good to me but finding someone in the flint,mi. area with HPTuners is going to be hard. I will check around on mifbody.com since its mostly michigan people maybe someone will have it. Thanks for the advise. As far as i understand the secondary air system just injects air into the exhast manifolds to heat up the cats. is this correct and is it really needed for the car to function properly or just improve emisions?
