How to upgrade rear on 1998 Z28??

My buddy has a 1998 Z28 with the following mods:
1998 Z28 Auto
MAF
3.73 rear gears
Air box
Hypertech Programmer
160* thermostat
LS6 intake w/ CAM
Flowmaster

What he wants to do is run Drag radials and a torque converter this summer. He says he already has a posi 3 series housing.

What does he need to do to run a 3200 stall with drag radials at the track? He currently runs low 8.4s @ 84.7 MPH in the 1/8. Any ideas on the time improvement he can get?

Thanks!
Zach

Well I would recommend some Lower Control Arms with relocation brackets and a TA rear girdle with stud kit. That should hold fine with a 3200 stall and drag radials. If hes gonna be doing more mods like built motor or some boost I would look into a 12 bolt.

get the axle tubes welded. that is the cheapest/most effective way of strengthing the stock rear. he should be okay until low 12's with an auto anyway. just stay away from the rear end covers!!!! WASTE OF MONEY!!!!

How so? If they are such a waste why is a TA rear cover an option on even 12 bolt and 9" rear ends? They just trying to take more of your money? From what ive heard and saw a new rear cover with a set of new lower control arms will keep the rear differential from twisting as much. Which can stress the gears and axles.
