How much is a new LS1 motor?

I think before 2005 closes out, if I have the proper funds, I am going to either buy a new LS1, LS6 or LS2 or just rebuild my current engine. But I've heard that it costs $4000 to rebuild, I would think that you can buy a whole new motor for that much money? At least maybe by next year I could...

Anyway, yea, anyone have a price list for this kind of thing or know off the top of your heads?

Dang I didn't know LS6's compression ratios were so high. I thought they were like the LS1s, around 9.6 or something.

That seems way to high for just an LS1 motor.

I've seen the LS1 rated as 10.1:1, and I've seen it as 10.2:1. AFAIK, the LS6 was rated at 10.5:1.

LS1 stock compression is 10.1:1
LS6 stock compression is 10.5:1

The LS1 has a 66.67cc combustion chamber
The LS6 has a 64.45cc combustion chamber

Other than heads cam shaft and intake the engines are the same and use a flat top eutectic piston and the difference in compression is due to the difference in the combustion chambers size.

If you already have an LS1/LS6 engine I would say that the best route would be to rebuild using better internals

For about $6800.00(using your block) we could build a Forged 347 LS1 long block with Stage 2 heads and a custom cam.

I'm currently having a forged shortblock built.

With LS6 intake, Patriot S2 heads, TSP camshaft, Fidenza flywheel, Spec clutch, dampener, ARP throughout, Comp lifters, forged pistons, sized rods, blueprinted/balanced and assembled ... I'm gonna come in at about $4500 ...

It should be a 450-475 crank horespower motor. With all the balancing and dampening, it ought to run very smooth ...

New motor

I agree building one up with forged goodies is a nice way to go. Howerver, should you want an new LS6, go to www.gmpartsdirect.com . The have the LS6 long block for $5,030.13. That's 405hp motor in a crate from chevrolet with the Camaro oil pan. BTW, when you get to the site, click on "upgrades" and then click on the Camaro SS and you will see the LS6 longblock button. Good luck.

PS a new LS1 cost $5,901.21 at the same site. I would buy the LS6

Dang, dont buy a stock motor. U can probabily get an already built stroked LS1 or stroke your current Ls1 for 4-7K. Or at least re-build it with forged internals and a nice heads and cam and come out alot better.

Thanks for the info guys. Will a rebuilt motor with forged internals, blueprinting and balancing be more/same reliable as a new one? Will it keep the same fuel economy?

I really want to keep the fuel economy since this is my daily driver.

I don't know where I got that 9.6:1 compression ration from...
