how much horsepower can the stock t-56 take????

I just want to make sure that i rebuild it before i break it. I dont want to be haulin *** somewhere and then all of a sudden i slam it and i blow the tranny. So if i could get a guess to how much hp it can take, so i know when to rebuild it. thanks guys.

The t-56 is a STRONG trans. They dont use them in F-bodys, Vipers, Cobras and other high hp cars for nothin. The trans should be good to hold at least 450hp no problem maybe more. Many people on this board are running that kind of power through their t-56.

 

All depends on how you drive it, there are guys cracking over 500 hp on it with out a problem. Personally if i had that kind of power i would upgrade to a even stronger trans.

 

is that 450 crank hp or wheel hp??

first off, you can't rebuild it- there are no aftermarket parts. There's a guy in the advanced forum that was making upgraded input/output shafts, but were very pricey.


Also, it's really not the hp/tq you're making as much as the amount of traction. George Baxter ran 1000hp through his (9 flat @150), with a conservative launch.

 

There are many parts upgrades for the t-56s. Check D&D in MI.
There's also a place in TX, the name eludes me right now.

 

You can always add the internals from the Viper T-56. They are stronger than the GM version.

 

Granted i have no experience inside the T56, but have been told by people who have that the viper internals are stronger because they are wider- which means they won't fit in ours. I know there is at least 1 person in advanced tech who is working on fitting the vipers into ours.

 

Hmm m... I've never done a parts swap, nor do I personally know someone who has done it, but I was pretty sure that most of the parts could come over.

Wasn't there a guy on here who installed the Viper shift forks? Arent those forks stainless?

450rwhp tends to be a delicate point for the T56. An agrressive H/C package should go along with a T56 upgrade, IMO.

 

a stock T56 is pretty reliable until around 500rwhp and or sticky tires.

I can fully rebuild T56s with parts that are even better than some of D&Ds stuff. Most of the big name shops give up on syncro transmission with big power, I came up with ways to make it stay together!!! email me

 

yes i believe that the factory ls1 shift forks are aluminum and the vipers are steel.
