Question How do you know if its an SS?

After a few rides in my car, a friend of mine is looking to buy a 2001 SS. He found a good deal, but is scared that its just a clone. What is the best way to tell if its a real SS or not? Carfax was no help, vin decoders are useless.
I tried doing a search here, but didnt really come up with anything ... so try not to flame me too bad

WU8 is the code. If I remember correctly WU9 is the 30th anniversary edition.

If you REALLY want to know for sure, goto SLP engineering's web sight and join the forum. Tell them the VIN and they will tell you if it's real and what the build # is.

Car fax wont show that its an SS, it will just show up as a Z28.

Open the driver-side door and look for a WU8 code on the sticker.

isn't there a number stamped on a piece of metal in the engine compartment somewhere. i thought only the authentic ss's had a seriel number or something along the lines of that on a bracket or something.

Wouldn't the door sticker with the WU8 on it also have the VIN#? If the VIN on the sticker doesn't match the one under the windshield, there's a problem. I doubt someone would go through very much trouble to pass it off..let alone change a sticker. How much money could really be made off of that? I mean, the car already has the SS gear (hood, etc.).
