Twist the **** counter clockwise. Unsnap the boot from the console, carefully as it may break. Two golden bolts hold the black portion of the handle to the linkage on the shifter, remove those and you've go it. Takes about 10 minutes.

If you want to remove the whole shifter assembly, like you're putting in a B&M or something then you need to do some more work. Remove the two screws found under the change holder in the console. Unsnap the cover that goes over the shifter, e-brake, etc. Remove the two 10mm bolts under that cover as well as the two that are in the console and the two that are at the head of the console on the dash, one each side. That whole unit can then slide up out of the way. Remove the shifter boot by undoing all 7 of the 7mm screws that surrount the boot. There are two on each side under the carpet, two at the top and one at the bottom. The boot is a little tough to get off at first, but it will just come up as you work it. Once that's done remove the four 10mm bolts that hold the shifter assembly to the transmission. Shake the stick a little bit to break the RTV up and pull it straight out.

Reverse the order to put it back together. Expect this to take about an hour.

it also helps to get the console out if you let the front seats all the way back and lay the backrests down flat.
