How do you clean out your air ducts?

The previous owner of my car was a smoker and it still smells a little when the heater is on. What is a good way to clean out the heater and A/C vents? Thanks

Try to get into the air box where the fan fulls air in to the system. Replace any duct work you can get to. Find somebody parting out a car and replace everything you can. Nicotene residue sucks. It's probably in the seats and carpet too.

Good luck.

You don't need to replace all the ducting to get rid of the smell. The person that owned my 97 Z28 before I did must have smoked 3 packs a day in the car. It was bad.

Pop the vent covers off the dash to get to the ducts. Use a damp rag with soap to clean the vent. You could even "engineer" a rag on a flexible rod (ie hangar) to get deep into the vents (just make sure that rag is secure!!!!). Anyhow, once it's wiped down with a damp soapy rag.... spray Febreeze into the vents. It will not smell like smoke anymore.

Also, if you feel ambitios, unbolt the seats and center console, the kick panel under the steering wheel, and then the carpet. You will be shocked at how much cigarette ash will migrate into these pieces if the previous owner smoked in the car.

Have fun and good luck.
