How can I tell what Exhaust I have?
How can I tell what Exhaust I have?
I purchased a 98 Z28 convertible right before Xmas. This site persuaded me to buy the car w/LS1 and man am I ever pleased!
I owned a 67 Camaro RS-SS 396 Convertible that we had to sell a few years back cause we needed the money, well my beloved wife had pity on me and let me buy this red monster and man is she quick. The BB chevy was a little more torquey but in a much more narrow band, this LS1 never seems to stop pulling, its GREAT!
Anyway, I was trying to figure out what exhaust is on the car. I don't think its stock cause it has a nice mellow throaty sound from behind the car, definetly not real loud, but it seems to be loader than stock should be, as least AFAIK.
It has 2 dark metal (not chrome) rectangular tips, 6" wide and 1.5 " high. I was wondering if the manufacturers put there names anyhere, i.e. stamped somewhere or serial or model numbers? Does this "sound" like stock or after market to the LS1 gurus out there?
I'm pleased with the cars performance so-far and was wondering what I'm working with to start before I contemplate modifications. Otherwise I'm sure the car is bone stock.
Thanks
Jeff

Sounds like GMMG sytle, but if you say its a mellow sound, then its not GMMG.......Do you have any pics? That should help us out.
Or actually its probably the stock Z28 catback, if it looks like rectangles

It is either a completely stock Z28 exhaust or an aftermarket muffler(maybe Flowmaster or Dynomax?) with the stock Z28 tailpipes or tips welded on(which a lot of people do).
Honestly, I don't think the stock system is the least bit deep or throaty sounding. And it is VERY quiet IMO. I could barely hear the stock exhaust inside the car on my last two LS1's. The idle was so quiet it was like listening to a minivan or something!
Just listen to another stock LS1 in your area and you ought to be able to tell the difference real quickly. And an aftermarket muffler is a lot smaller than the stock one(stock is HUGE).

Ya I would definitely agree with the aftermarket muffler theory.. here's the sound of a flowmaster for you .. http://kryptonitedesign.com/z28/z28exhaust.mpg
OK, I went outside and checked out the exhaust again, it is welded on and the muffler looks a lot newer than the pipes. However it must be the stock muffler cause its large and has a "GM" and a number stamped on it, so that answers the question I suppose. It must be stock!
I just think that it sounds too rumbly at idle for it to be stock, but I'm propbaly too used to my S-10 Blazer to make an objective observation. Go figure!!
