High idle speed
High idle speed
I recently purchased a 98 z 6-speed and the car runs great but it idles at 1100 rpm. I've owned ls1's in the past and every one idled at like 8-900 rpm. It also runs really cool too, about 170 or 180. All the others ones I've had run at a little below the 210 mark. I'm thinking maybe someone put a 160 degree thermostat in it. Any ideas, I'm clueless about this. Thanks for any help!
snake - mine is exactly like yours.....idles at 1100 at startup, and 1000 when the motor warms up
and always runs cool
i was told at ls1tech, that sometimes the tach just gets a bit off, when it says its idling at 1000, it could actually be 8-900

It's actually idling at 850
On the tach it shows 1100, but yesterday I plugged up to a computer and it's really 850...so that is the good news.
The bad news is the temperature on the computer showed my car to be 17 degrees hotter then what the gauge shows.

Not sure how normal that drop right away and to 600 rpms is, But i have learned the hard way many times over the years, that if it aint broke dont fix it. If the car runs fine now, leave it alone. Many times something like that would concern me and i would get it fixed only to have a worse problem, suddenly i would wish it just was the way it was before i fixed it.
The reason you see it running cooler is because 99-02 F-Body cars have the computer tuned to show the temp at 210 in normal driving conditions. The 98's actually have a somewhat accurate temp guage. 170-180 is normal on a 98 without a low temp thermo. 99-02 cars are nowhere close to accurate on the temp guage.
