Help me find: Scraping/Grinding Noise
Help me find: Scraping/Grinding Noise
I have an odd rotational "scraping" or "grinding" noise coming from the front of the engine. This noise can be heard with the hood closed and "whines down" to a stop when you turn the engine off. The odd part is that so far it only makes the noise when hot, say after driving at operating temperature for a while and then coming to rest at idle in a parking lot.
My initial thoughts are water pump or an idler pulley. I do own a stethoscope and will poke around but wanted to get some other ideas of things to check first.
The car is a 2002 Z28 with 44,xxx miles on it and it started making this noise out of the blue.
Thanks for the help.

Remove the two drive belts and hand spin all the accessories including the idler pulley and you should find the problem . If the idler pulley is the problem , there is a sticky at the top of the forum that tells you how to service the bearings yourself and save some money . Good luck !
