Help me feel better about tranny choice!
I've always been a fan of manual trannies... and when I put some money down on a '02 Z28 with an M6, I felt without a doubt that I made the right choice. Then I read all this stuff about how an A4 with an aftermarket torque converter would let me hook up better and post quicker ET's. I don't think I want to build a drag car... but I don't like thinking that I can get beat so easily because the guys with the A4 can launch better. What do you think I should do? Just go with the M6 because it's more fun to drive, IMO... or go with an A4 and know that I'm quicker than the next guy? :-)
Thanks in advance,
Steve

If you're not serious, or even semi-serious about racing just take the M6 and be happy. So you might lose a race here and there, who cares?

TS, the fun of driving a manual far out-weighs any advantage an auto might have. The manuals put down more hp and there are mods you can make, drag radials (I just got some Nittos, love them) gears etc. that will even out the auto launch advantage. This past weekend I spanked an auto C5 (vette) ha ha, my Nittos hooked and away I was. The 6Ms have a better resale value too! You made the right choice.

I had an A4 in my 94Z and would never consider an A4 again. Even my wife loves driving the M6 cars. Stay with it and practice launches, you'll get much better at it and will learn just how to do it when you need to.

>>SOLD<<WHITE96SS **Now have a Hugger Orange SS M6, Hooker LT's/Y-pipe/SLP 2OTL, 4.10 gear, Spec stage lll carbon clutch, lid...13.19 @107 2.08 60' with just the lid. Modded times to come!
91 Talon TSI/AWD 13.52 @100.2 1.89 60'
It's my understanding that they aren't so much better. Just more consistant. I would think that if you had a 3200 stall it would be almost the same thing as dropping the clutch at 2500-3000 or so. With practice I think the M6 is faster.

Both have their ups and downs. Couldnt go wrong eitherway. I prefer an auto cause its a little more easy to harness the power which can also be a problem becaus it can harness it TO much when it dosent downshift at a certain speed while that M6 next to you does and proceeds to suck your paint off.
Racing on the street i prefer a manual(unless the auto has a converter) becaus most races happen from rolls on the street anyhow. On the track i prefer an Auto becaus its more consistant and easy to launch. Whenever i buy another sports car i want to get a 6speed equipped car though, since i never go to the track anyway.

Well the A4 is the reason I got a 2002 Z28. I had some unfinished business with the LS1 so I'm trying the A4 thing out. SO far its going very very well. The A4's are more consistant, quicker and easier to drive. They rule without a doubt at the track.
However for someone like me who drives the car daily I love the M6. I mis it because of the fun factor and the ability to pick your poison, (gear) and drop the clutch. The A4 is easier in traffic and more nimble because a flick of the right foot gets instant throttle resonse and movement. But of the two the M6 is better for fun and all around street driving, the A4 rules at the track.
If I could have my choice I'd have a 6-speed Camaro SS convert for daily driving and fun. Then have a A4 Z28 coupe for track duty.
