Headers, long tube or short?
Headers, long tube or short?
Hello All,
Could anyone please advise as to the better header (short or long tube) for an '02 ls1 Camaro.
Also, I am not pleased with my flowmaster system and looking to buy a new catback...I was thinking of the GMMG system...any thoughts?
I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks!

Re: Headers, long tube or short?
Long tube is hte only way to go. Your stock manifolds flow only slightly less than most shorty headers, so the switch would be a very minimal gain. LT's on the other hand will give you a significantly better boost. And i'm sure everone agrees, flowmaster sucks. If you have a 3" pipe, you might as well keep the pipe, and buy a new muffler, thats a much cheaper route.
Re: Headers, long tube or short?
I'd go either LT or mids depending on what you're going to do with the car.
GMMG is over rated and over priced. Forget 3" thats a mere .25" larger than stock. Either get 3.5 or go duals.

Re: Headers, long tube or short?
thanks for the feedback. I am going with coated long tubes and the adjustable borla system. I have noticed that many borla equipped cars' tailpipes hang crooked...they must be heavy. I am hoping I can hang them straight.
Lastly, my car is lowered about an inch...I am crossing my fingers that the headers will not be a problem. Any suggestions? thanks again for taking the time to help me, it is appreciated.

LS! manifolds flow about 1/100th less than your standardshorties... the gain for dollar is unreasonable
longtubes are the only way to go however because of clearence and emissions issues, if you have to pass an E test requiring a visual inspection of the catalytic converters or if you plan on dropping the car more thn .35 in the front you neeed to look into mAC midlengths. longtubes require moving th cats (if keeping them at all) and would fail a visual because moving the cats for any reason is illegal even if they are still operable. you need a longtube with at least a 1 and 3 quarters prmiary and 3" collector. i recommend pacesetter... they come in 2 versions, off road (straight tubes) and the normal which has the hookup on top of i think the number 3 cylinder prmiary for your EGR as well as ports for your rear 2 O2 sensors.
make sure you get the coated ones too... or they look like **** after 2 months

I'm pretty sure mid lenghts require moving the cats as well, so if a visual inspection is required, you're gonna be SOL either way.
As far as cat-back, Magnaflow is the best bang for the buck, imo. One of the cheapest stainless steel kits and flows well. It's nice and mellow for daily driving, but you go WOT and it sounds really good.

Re: Headers, long tube or short?
Go with the LT's and stay away from SLP headers if you are lowered because they already have clearance issues with stock height cars. For the money, you just can't beat the pacesetters and for the catback try to listen to as many different ones as you can, then get the one that suits your style and budget.I have pacesetters with the hooker catback and to me it sounds like the bigblock chevelles from the late 60's/early 70's, although it is not stainless, it is aluminized steel and so far seems to be holding up pretty well and is inexpensive as far as catbadks go and flows very good!
