head porting, newbie questions

im considering a ported and polished heads mod to my 99 SS and have a few questions, bear with me cause im new to this type of mod.
1) first and foremost, what kind of horsepower increase can i expect.

2) will it affect my gas mileage much? (assuming my driving habits dont change)

3) can i just have my stock heads machined or do i have to buy a whole new set?

4) will it affect the life of my engine to have this done if its the only internal engine mod that i have?.

5) i have seen a lot about flow sheets and cfm numbers etc, what is an ideal amount of porting to have done. like when i go into the machine shop and tell them i need the heads ported, how much do i tell them to port?

6) and is there anything else that i should do while i have all of this apart?

anyone wanna take this post on? thanks

yeah you can use your stock heads, i did, gas milage...i get around 160 to a full tank, do ls6 intake and a cam for sure, you get alot more with cam, i have "stage 2 fully ported heads" speed inc did it, they have excellent prices, its in the chicago land area. i dont think it affects the life of the engine much. and finally hp increase i dont know JUST ported/polished most people throw a new cam in

A cam with more lift will be needed to get the best potential out of your heads, however I remember seeing that someone did heads only a vette a while back and picked up 28 to the wheels.
