Gutted cat, worth it?

I recently got a 02 Trans AM and probaly the first thing I'll do is the hood(Mecham) or cat back exhaust. Till I get the money together, I was thinking for $50 I can get the cat or cats( I havent looked yet ) gutted and maybe set off a few alarms.

Is this worth it, or will it give me problems? ANyone done this to an LS1?

If you want to go that route and get rid of those restrictive stock convertors, your best bet is to get some bolt-on off-road test pipes. They can be bolted on in place of the cats and just unbolted when it comes time for emission testing. Very easy install/uninstall. Here is a link to a cheap set on ebay...

Or get the rear O2 sensors deleted by a tuner for $50.

For a little more than those pipes cost you could get some carsound hi-flow cats off ebay.
