On an LS1, do you see enough of a gain by replacing the stock MAF with a Granatelli unit? If so, what kind of gains are we talking about. Do you need to reprogram the computer or anything, i.e. will it throw the check engine light on? I can pick one up for $100 and was wondering if it's worth it.

From what ive heard they arent worth the money. Whatever gains you initally get are "fixed" by your computer and it is back to normal. At least thats what ive heard could be wrong

I'd only put one on my car if I got it for free. The stock MAF is fine until you get into H/C and even then I'd still probably just port my stock one.

the stock 3.5" maf with the screen removed flow about 1000cfm.. way more than any head cam will ever need

Do you know how many cfm you increase just by removing the screen?

Removing the screen would improve flow 5% at best. I doubt you would see any improvement. It would be interesting to see if there was any change on a dyno though. Anyone?

How many on this board have done the screen removal? I have reservations about the whole deal.B/C not here but others have said after the screen removal you get a rough idle true/false? That the screen actually difuses the air for a proper reading by the mass air sensor true/false?
Sh#t I almost bought one of the aftermarket MAFs,after hearing awhile ago(not this thread) others say heck no,well $300 saved.I've seen tests in Mags that say they give gains in CHP,GMHT

But the removal of the screen I been thinkin about BUT(see above) been hesitant. would that mod be @ installuniversity or whatever it is?

Granitelli MAF = crap...all aftermarket MAF= crap. Just descreen the stock one, then after you descreen it reset your computer. Your car will not idle rough.

I just put my stock MAF front half back on. I had ported a stock MAF housing and I started running rich (beats me .... I thought it was supposed to lean me out)

From what I've read, descreening the MAF is a crap shoot. The abnormal airflow over the MAF sensors will either make you go lean, or make you go rich. Unfortunately, I went rich.

But, since I have a 2nd set of OEM MAF housings laying around, I put an original front half with the screen and divider intact. That way, the MAF sensors see the airflow in the manner it was designed. I left the ported half on the back.

I just did the swap yesterday, so I'll see if it straightens out my mix.

I have the GMAF and have no problems with it. Dyno'd well for me a year after the install, though I didn't do a before-after install just for that component. But, with a GMAF, pulley and lid in an A4 I dyno'd 322 rwhp, which is on the very strong side. I don't believe the GMAF was hurting me in the slightest.

It is overpriced at the original price, but for $100, it's fine. Gives you 81mm diameter and recalibrates to ensure that you still run rich for the cats. But, with edit or a MAFT, you can easily lean it out and stretch another 7-8 rwhp out of it.

Doesn't react well to HPP power tuning though.

I preferred it to porting my own maf because I heard too many problems (back in 2000 or so) with bad detonation on ported mafs. It was always a crap shoot for success - adding the MAFT helped out most guys though. IMO.

Those MAF`s blow. Do a search on ebay there are always like 10 of them for sale. I know someone who lost 2 tenths with it. Unless you get the cars computer retuned with installed you wont be happy.

I got Granatelli's new Z06 MAF for my 02 Z28, and played around with it on the dyno. With this one it looks like they finally got their stuff right: my buddy with a 98 SS with lid, loudmouth and the SLP MAF dyno'd his car, then reset the computer and got 7 more HP. On the other hand, I tried the same thing but went from 345 rwhp to an even 340 on then next pull.
