Got a weird question for you all
Today i visited a friend at her apartment. She had been wanting a ride in my car for quite a while now and today we both finally had a chance to. Well to show off a little I wanted to do a burnout for her, and I haven't done one of those in quite a while!! Anyways, I wasn't able to do so. I sat there brought up the rpm's a little and let out the clutch and floored it. But there was no tire squelling or even smoke from all the rubber I was hoping to burn. It kinda reacted like i was just slowly leting off the clutch, but my foot was on the floor not the pedal. So my question is, is my clutch going bad or what. I had asked my dad a while ago but he said it sounded like the pressure plate was going out. Mainly b/c everyonce and a while the clutch pedal just felt really mushy and soft, but never stayed like that. I just kinda wrote it off to the hot weather at the time especially since I haven't had that problem for a while, even after today it wasn't mushy at all.
Let me know if any of this makes sense or needs clarification or whatever.

Must be the T-Tops!!! Actually how many miles are on the clutch?? Can you hear the throwout bearing rattleling when you push in the pedal?? Lastly are you sure the return springs not broken?? Who knows if it high mileage maybe time for a new clutch. 1st thing to go is 1st gear then it progressively gets worse. I drove my 68 Vette to the dealer in 4th gear at 4000 rpm only had that gear and reverse left.
Well Jay, I think your just jealous that you don't have T-tops!!
But for real, i'm not very mechanical savvy, but everything seems alright in that regard, the pedal always come back up w/o problems. But like I said I don't know for sure
Old SS yea I do have ASR
but i turned the button off before we even pulled outa the parking spot, does it matter??
My00 I'm gonna try to score the points whenever I can, and she had been wanting to do since i met her last year. And being the true blue guy that I am I just had to show her what it could do!! Unfortunately, it didn't go as I had planned, but such is life!

Well Bob this is 1 of those things that make you go "Hymmm". I can get the tires to chirp in gears 1-3. Im sure I dont have anymore tourqe then you do. Just a newer clutch I guess. Ive only owned 2 autos since 1972 so I do know a bad clutch when I drive 1. And as for T-Tops had them back in 1968 on my Vette. Swore Id never get them again
Good luck with the ladies and practice makes perfect so burn up some more rubber and have fun
It sounds like your clutch didn't hook up. Whenever you press the gas to the floor and you don't go anywhere its usually your clutch slipping. Although I'm suprised you didn't smell it....
If you had a problem with the clutch itself PP, Throw out bearing it would happen all the time, not just that once.
The stock clutch ain't all that great especially if its hot outside and the clutch is already hot. I did the same thing trying to do a burn out in from of Stealth Performance for the owner. I was used to my 93 with Nittos spinning and barely being able to tell. It was hot as hell outside dropped the hammer and it just stayed there didn't realize until I started to shift into second that the tires weren't spinning
Just bought the car a week before so didn't know it that well it. The clutch only had 12K on it I ordered a spec stage III that day.
The only other thing is hydraulics I know the 98-00 had some issues but never had it happen to me so someone else has to chime in on that.
If it IS the CLUTCH assembly don't worry on trying to figure it out and just replace the whole thing. Its pretty simple and one of those jobs if you tear it apart its better to just replace the whole assembly. The Zo6 is a good deal like 320 for clutch pp flywheel and TO bearing(I think) Don't quote me on the price it was cheap though I read somewhere that all 01-02 got this clutch so I went with the Spec III since the car already roasted one.
Hope that helps

Yea I'm gonna go with the clutch too. I don't know what kinda miles your car has but it definetly sounds like the clutch is toast. A 99 Z should smoke the rubber completely off the rim. Easy job though.. Didn't you smell anything after the failed attempt?
Nope no weird smells or anything like that. I've got 33500 miles on the car. I had been thinking it was the clutch going just kept hoping it wasn't, I don't quite have the funds for a whole assembly yet, but I suppose a SPEC III can be forseen in my future. Thanks for the replys guys!!

Next time throw a little water under the rear tires when she isn't looking.
Once they are spinning, a little left foot braking might help.
Always practice your "technique" before springing it on a lady.
