GM Top Engine Cleaner / Piston Slap... RESULTS
As some of you may remember, I posted a few weeks ago stating that the dealer wanted to try an application of GM Top Engine Cleaner to get rid of a minor case of piston slap I have when the engine is below full operating temperature and between 2100 and 2400 RPM. This is on a 2000 SS M6 with 18,000 miles. Well, the results are, as expected, it did nothing at all to help with the problem. The dealer told me that this noise "was not uncharacteristic for this engine". They told me if I wasn't satisfied, to give the GM Customer Assistance Center a call, which I did, and they extended the engine warranty to 7 years 100,000 miles from the in service date, which I am satisfied with. Otherwise, the engine is not an oil burner, and I was't too excited about having a mechanic tear the engine completely apart anyway, so I think the warranty extension was a good compromise. Also, the dealer replaced the front rotors under warranty since they were resurfaced under 2500 miles ago and started to pulse again. Overall, this dealer has been great to work with.

Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center: 800-222-1020. This number is in your owner's manual and also in your warranty booklet. You need to have called them BEFORE your original 3/36 factory warranty expires and a good working relationship with a dealer helps tremendously. Everything you tell them, they will verify with the dealer. To get anywhere, BE NICE and BE CALM, but be firm. You won't get anywhere if you go in with guns blazing. By the way, this is not a typical extended warranty. It covers only the engine since this is the area where the noise is occuring and it is simply an extension of the manufacturer's original warranty because of an unresolved issue.
