Getting The Z Tuned?

I AM THINKING ABOUT GETTING MY CAR TUNED WITH A PRETTY WELL KNOWN GUY IN THE BAY AREA. IM ALSO THE ONE THAT HAD THE HOOKER LONG TUBES TO A 3" Y THAT SEEMED TO HAVE LOST POWER. I CHANGED BY SINGLE 3" TO THE FLOWMASTER TO A 21/2 FOR BACK PRESSURE AND IT SEEMED TO HAVE HELPED WITH THE TORQUE AND HP. THE GUY SAID TO PUT THE 3" BACK ON AND HE SAID IT JUST NEEDED TO BE TUNED ( I HAVE NO CATS AND NO REAR O2's, just sims.) ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS, IM JUST TRYING TO SAVE MYSELF SOME MONEY AND NOT BLOW $500. ??

well for one, save us all by turning the caps lock off
seems like you're yelling
not insulting ya, just trying to make it easier on us

backpressure is not good on any car except (from what i've heard) 4 bangers since they need a little for some reason or another
the 3 in is definately better than the 2 1/2 and the 2 1/2 only feels better because the torque is lower in the powerband
i think when you switch to a freer flowing exhaust it moves the tq and hp slightly up in the powerband making it feel like it "lost" power
don't be fooled by that

as for tuning, no cats and no rear 02's shouldn't be causing any problems since you have sims
but if you want to get it tuned (really don't NEED it til you have more mods) but i've heard of 20+rwhp on a STOCK lt1 just from a custom tune (granted it's an lt1 but, i'm sure it would help on the ls1 also)
and i hope you don't pay 500$ to have it tuned, that seems way too steep

good luck in whatever you choose

Hey thanks for the info. When I had the 3" single to the y-pipe it bogged real bad. all the way to 6,000 rpm's thats why I put the 21/2 on. and now it starts to pull around 4700rpm's. I just want to make sure my exhaust is maxed out before i tune it to get the most out of it. The guy I bought the headers from has a 21/2 y-pipe to a 3 inch then to a spintech muffler. we have the exact same mods except the ASA cam which im installing soon. and he dynoed at 409 to the rear wheels. and rite now my car just doesnt go, literally at all untill 4500rpm's. then it gradually starts to pull. thats why im thinking abot going changing the exhaust to max out the tuning. what do you think?? sorry its so much writing

klypto is right, you should be pulling at like 3grand, not 4500
i suspect something else ifs off
is your ses (service engine soon) light coming on?
maybe the sims aren't working right?

It does seem to pull real late. My SES light came on and when we ran the code, its my egr. Its not flowing enough because I have not baught the extension to the hooker long tubes I put on. So rite now its just capped off. But i dont think that should have such a big impact?

maybe it's sending bad readings to the front O2's?
but, i'm not really sure that the egr could be producing such a problem
i'd look up people who !egr to see what all they did
i wonder if you have to do somethign else so the computer can compensate for no egr?

either way, i'd probably get the extension to see if it changes anything
the best fix is the cheapest
plus, !egr doesn't really have any benefits except for a marginal power gain, if any

I almost got the extension but its almost $100. So I got a K&N filter key chain, took my old air tube that goes to the header, cut it, put a short piece of heater hose on it and stuck the filter on the end with some worm clamps. So now it sucks in clean air, not exhaust. I thought it was cool? thanks for the info.
