ive posted this before ..... so here comes the copy and paste

Ive had a gear problem with my 95' camaro i drive right now, the mechanics from GM shop said that the gears will continue to whine until you replace them. Mostly cause they are not meshing right. So if its a whine the only way u can get rid of it is to replace the gears. I could hear my gears whine when I hit the gas and speeds up by 40 mph... luckily my car was still under a extended warranty and got the gears replaced my a certified GM dealer for about $1500. Which through the warranty I "thankfully" had to pay a $50 deductable + fluids. If its a constant noise around all speeds its more than likely a bearing problem (Yes ive had the bearings replaced about 3 months before I had the gears replaced.) But if its more of a stop and go noise try looking at the U-joints. Hope this helps.

If you go to a 3.73 or steeper gear it will whine...plain and simple. It isn't that noticeable though, mostly on deceleration.

Some gears will whine despite if they're set correctly or not. Higher ratio gears (3.73+) USUALLY whine a bit. Unless you're LISTENING for it though, you won't notice it most likely, so I doubt your parents will ever tell.
