Gear Shift Spins Around !
I have a 99 SS and the gear shifter(not the ****) spins around freely. Is this supposed to do this ? My old Z28 never did this and I have driven an SS with the Hurst shifter and it didn't spin or move around either. If it's not supposed to spin freely what is wrong with it and how can I fix it ? The car drives and shifts perfectly.
I am thinking that you say spining you mean really loose ...There are two bolts if you take off the shifter boot that attach the shifter top to the base of the shift...Get some locktight and put it on those two bolts and tighten...that should fix your problem.

Yikes, I think Seth thought your shift post was loose, I read it as your shifter ****. The **** screws on (as normal) to the top of the post, it must just be loose. Try turning the **** clockwise (when looking towards the front of the car)until it starts to tighten up, then you should still be able to turn it another full turn or two, then it should be tight.

Hi. I also own this car (ok, it is mine but I let my husband drive it sometimes....) The actual stick spins around, not the **** (we tried to change the **** and found that the stick was spinning as we were turning the ****...) The guy at the dealership said it is suppose to be like that. The service department at the dealership has no clue (one guy says yes that's normal, one guy says no.) Ok, fellow 6 speed owners, do me a favor, grap you stick and tell me if it spins! I guess I'll just take it in to have it looked at. Thanks.
Well sounds as though this post is some kind of a joke. The factory stock post cannot spin around, it is fixed by two bolts and cannot spin around as you describe. If it is an aftermarket design etc, who knows. Question, can you remove the ****..? Have you tried, what happened?

This is no joke. I am totally serious. This is my 4th Camaro and I have never seen it. I was just wondering if anyone has seen this before. I am taking it to the dealership today. It doesn't seem right that I can spin the stick. I tried to take the **** off but since the stick spins I couldn't do that. I didn't want to use vice grips to anchor it either. Hopefully this isn't the tip of the iceberg. I hope nothing serious is wrong. Thanks guys!

Sounds to me like the studs broke off the bolts that hold the shift handle in place.
I bet the rubber isolator is the only thing holding it into the shifter. Don't yank straight up!
