Gas Mileage
Gas Mileage
Alright guys, here's the story. I find that my tank fluctuates everytime I put gas in. The farthest I got on a full tank was 244 miles (of course I did a lot of highway driving that tank), and the lowest like 96. WHY is this happening? I have a few questions:
1) Does shifting/driving at a lower rpm help conserve gas? Or is it high rpm driving? (I usually shift at about 1500 rpm, and drive no higher than 2000. If it goes past that I shift up.)
2) Is there something I can replace to fix this IF there is a problem? Gas is raising everyday; it's $2.10 for premium now.
3) Does rev'ing my engine take a significant amount of gas? I'll usually rev up to 3 or 4 to set some import alarms off at their cute car meetings.
Anything i'm missing? Any help or advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks fellas.

If i really push it and drive a while after the light comes on, i've gotten 310 miles on one tank. Otherwise, i usually get about 280-290, depending on how i drive. The way you push that gas pedal has an extremely big effect on your gas mileage...Much more so than the average grocery getter car.
But only getting 90 miles to a tank??? That sounds like you either drove for hours in first gear at like 10,000 RPM or you have a hole in your tank?

Does your car run bad? I mean, does it bog, smell like fuel, blow lots of black smoke out the tailpipes, leave carbon deposits on the rear bumper, etc. ?
It sounds like you're wasting fuel somehow. Maybe you have a lean condition and your car's PCM is adding tons of fuel to compensate? My Bird gets like 220-240 in the city with the mods listed in my sig, and that's romping on it from like every light
Chris, you in the Navy? I was in Norfolk/VA Beach for school a few times at Dam Neck...

It sounds like something is wrong. You should get a LOT better mileage than that. I treat my SS fairly gentle most of the time, and can easily get 20-22 mpg (over 300 miles per tank is routine). Higher RPM will have a significant effect on mileage, so if you like to keep your RPM's up in the 2500-4500 range, your mileage drop significantly. 90 per tank sounds awfull. Is that for a tankfull of 1/4 mile runs?
Bone Maro,
No, i'm not in the navy, but everybody else here is, i live near the base. I actually just moved to Norfolk a few months ago from Hampton to be closer to my job in Virginia Beach, but Norfolk is just not doing it for me. I cant wait to move. I didnt know it when i moved here, but it is kind of a bad area.

Nah, like I said... I shift and drive in relatively low rpm's (2500 max). I don't know what it is. I race every now and then, but I didn't think it'd drop me down to 90 mpg. I agree, that is horrible, that's why I askeda bout reving the engine, driving at low or high rpms, etc...
I do the same type of shifting as you do, and I range from 260-300 miles a tank. Something is definately wrong if you get 90 per tank. Make sure all your fuel injectors are working; if they're bad, you can suck up a lot more gas. It's strange that your miles per tank are so inconsistent though. Good luck, let us know what you find!
