Gas gage

Gas gague
I don't really know where to put this post... so i put it here...
I have had my 1999 SS for all of 3 days now and the battery has died and in doing so, I think screwed up my gages... my gas gage reads a constant full, well above the full line, maxed out... now I am not a camaro guru or anything, but something tells me that the gas gage on an SS doesn't stay at max for very long, and it has been. It was maxed out and the car took 4 gallons of gas... again, im no guru, but 4 gallons is almost a quarter of a tank.. and it was pegged... does anyone know how to fix this problem? is it cheap? cuz so far, in my week of owning an american car, it has had more problems than 4 years of my honda ownage... help me please!!!!

Not sure I see how a battery problem would have affected the gauges.
Is there an A/C Delco authorized rebuilder near you ?
If so, they can check out the gauge cluster for you .
The one in my area quoted me a R & R fee of $45.00 - I did it myself as it was quite easy.
(The '99's had a problem w/ the trip meter resetting in cold weather - there is a Tech Service Bulletin out on it. Note that if the gauge cluster is replaced , the PCM must be reflashed to accept the cluster - learned that from first hand experience as the airbag light came on. Pretty much mandates a trip to thed ealer for the reflash.)
Do all the other gauges function ?
If so, perhaps the float/sender in the tank has stuck - that's not quite so easy to get to if it is the case.
4 gallons used = a hair over 3/4 tank in my car, depending upon how hard I flogged it .
You said that the battery went bad - any possibility that acid leaked on to a wire, messing it up ?
Best of luck !

Yeah, my battery died, and when I tried to start it up, the tac and the speedometer both shot up to max and then back down to zero, all the lights on the dash came on and then went off... and then the gas gague isn't working properly.. so i am thinking it must have had something to do with the battery going out..
