Fuel level!!

Just curious, I have '00 z28…. A light signal is energized indicating

low level in my tank. If I go and ignored the light, for how many

more kilometres can car still travel until fuel line is empty of gas? Any idea …..

When the light comes on, the tank is getting very empty at that point. Don't remember the exact amount of gas left, though.

I have, however, driven 30+ miles (50+ kilometers) with the light on.

Hope this helps.

Talking You people are far braver than I !!

For one thing, I don't like running out of gas, so I tend to shy away from playing "Mr. E " !

Another thing is that being an electric fuel pump, it is lubricated by the fuel supply.

Too little = little lubrication , which can = premature pump failure.

Just some food for thought ...

Fuel light referred to is the Check Gagues light.

98's DO NOT have this light so don't run low and expect it to come on as a warning.

DO NOT SEE HOW FAR YOU CAN GO EITHER!!! Whenever you see this light get gas asap or get ready to spend $300-$1000 (depending if you do the labor) on a new fuel pump.

You don't even have to run completely dry to kill the pump.

On my 98Z I ran low ONCE, sputtered as I pulled into the gas station. Filled it up, pulled off, still sputtering, then it died.

Didn't move again untill there was Walbro sitting in place of the old pump.

DO NOT SEE HOW FAR YOU CAN GO!!!

I'm with Britt and 5LITEREATER - I never let my guage fall below 1/4 - I know 2 people who've replaced fuel pumps - can't say what the cause was - but I don't want to go there.

My '98 triggers the "check gauges" light when the gas gauge gets to "E".

I have never seen an owners manual of any car tell how much gas is left when the light comes on, it is a guessing game and they don't want the liability when they tell you there is 2 gallons left and they were wrong in your case. Each car is different.

heres some food for thought:
When I usually fill up, I put about 14 gallons in and thats when it gets to E, and the Check guages light comes on. Recently, I kept putting 5.00 in for a couple times, and when I finally refilled the gas tank, it took over 16 gallons! So, I would say there is 2-3 gallons of gas left in the tank when it first gets to E and the light comes on. However you will not get 100km out of that much gas. Maybe on the highway you might make 50miles but like others have said, it will kill ur pump.

The wife's GA is on it's 3rd fuel pump because of this. Gratefully all under warranty. Had a mechanic tell her what was just said about the fuel cooling the pump. Now she fills it when it gets to 1/4 tank and haven't had anymore problems.

If only they'd listen when we tell them....
