Post Free RamAir mod useless on an SS?

I am thinking about doing this, I have a 99SS with a direct-flo lid, GMS MAF, and a Flowtech Cutout.

Is this pretty much a useless mod performance wise? I have read the debates, just want some final opinions.

I don't think this is a useless mod on an SS because the SS still gets its air thru the front opening of the airbox. By removing the bottom of the airbox (what the FRA is all about) you are now receiving that much more air from the bottom, regardless of how much air your getting from only the front.

Its not useless but not very good either. The SS Hood is nice to look at but it but since it has such a odd way of bringing air into the motor and not sealed to the airbox its really not too good. Although better than a Z28 and better than nothing. The best bet would be to get a cold air kit from Fast Toys or SLP and close off the hood completely. The cold air kits work better and are more sealed too.

Get a Volant Cold Air induction system, then cut the bottom panel out, this will seal your intake off from the engine bay keeping the heat out and allow you to bring is some air from the top, but most will come in from the bottom. the fast toys forced induction would work with this set up.

Thumbs up

I have it, and my buddy here @ work (SilverSSGuy) has it, too,

I guarentee (or twice your money back - Free Mod , get it ? ) that you will feel the difference on the highway -down low, I can't say that it makes much difference.

I have had no water problems, either , so don't let the rumors scare you.

Good Luck, and enjoy !

Chrisdude, you numbers seem low, what were your 60' times? How many miles on the car? Anyway, no the hood is not a waste, it brings cooler air into the motor, which is good of course. The unfortunate thing is that GM didn't make it a true "Ram Air" system that pressurizes as the car gets moving, thus adding some real HP. I have been evaluating my car (same as yours, an SS) for a while now and have developed a plan to create, myself, a true pressurized ram air system. It would function very similiar to the FTRA system but would reach down further and scoop air with a forward facing scoop. The hood scoop would then be relegated to pushing cool air into the engine compartment helping to keep the engie cool, but that's all. All the surfaces can be sealed very good and I expect it would create a very good ram air effect that should be worth close to 15 rw at speed.

Thanks for the replies!

As for my numbers,

The best ET (13.6) was when the car was bone stock. It was still fairly new...

My car now has a GMS MAF, Direct Flo Lid, Cutout and 61,000 miles on it

I am going to be taking it to the track soon, but I fear my clutch is going bad.

My times suck because I am new to the stick shift. I am a horrible launcher, my 60 foot on that run was 2.2 my best 60 was a 2.1 (did that once at the 1/8 mile track)

Normal 60 usually are 2.2-2.4

I did the free ram air mod to my V6 Camaro and didn't think it was worth it because it gets the air filter dirty very fast and even though it's a cleanable k&n its still a pain.

The Volant does this somewhat, cutting the bottom out of course negates this, but left in it seals the intake off from the engine bay. Worth a look, I like mine, Volant claims something like a 16-18 RWHP gain, I personally havn't been able to prove this but I'd guess 8-12 hp.
