Re: Free Ram Air?

Are you serious???

A razor knife cutting away little half-moon shapes one stroke at a time followed by smaller slivers until you get to a prescribed line. This approach may work, but I'm cautious to tell you this. It would be very easy to cut yourself this way, and also very easy to remove too much material if you get over zealous while trimming. Be prepared for it to take a while if you want a good end result.

Re: Free Ram Air?

Don't do that to your bumper.

If you can't afford RAM air you can't afford RAM air.

Don't be ghetto. This mod is on par with wrapping a fuse with copper because your too cheap to buy a new one.

Re: Free Ram Air?

I am against this mod because it only works in theory and the theory leads to a very dirty air filter.

Yes, it can be done without a dremel, I did it on my V6 Camaro before I owned a dremel. I used a sharp pair of pliers. I recommend just buying a dremel you can get a cheap one for around $20-$30. Mine has become pretty handy.

Also, if you truly believe in ram air on cars, you have to block off the stock intake opening.

Re: Free Ram Air?

personally i don't think the FRA mod is what the name implies.

it really isn't a ram air....it's more of a less restrictive air box.

how easily do you think it is for the engine to pull air through that 10x3/4" slot on the front of the air box??
if you can increase the exposure of the filter to outside air, you'll get better performance.

if the filter is getting dirtier i would say taht is a pretty good indication it's getting more air.

and YES....the ssra does require the FRA mod to install it...

Umm why would you have to do this? air can come in from both under and front? 2 places are better than one

Because your not getting the theoretical ram air effect if you have a second opening the pressurized air can getout through. Many of the kits come with a block off plate for the stock opening.

Re: Free Ram Air?

Oh i see 99...ram air sounds like bs to me in eveyones honest opionion do you think the front ram air opening coupled with the under radiator scoop "ram air mod" cut out would produce more gains than the "ram air mod" with the front blocked off? hmmm

i would think the first would be better (front and free ram air mod coupled)

Re: Free Ram Air?

since the "free ram air" mod isn't actually a ram air...

keeping the front opening and doing the FRA should get the best gains.

i don't think there is enough pressure built up with the FRA to warrent blocking off the front opening. as someone stated, the more open the air box is to outside air, the better off you are.

Re: Free Ram Air?

Good point, ram air wouldn't even occur on the FRA if ram air is even possible on cars. My personal conclusions:

FRA-not ram air no matter what, easier air flow (if you keep the filter clean ) and if your going to do that might as well raise the air box too.
