Fram or K/N?

I've noticed alot of guys have fram air filters. Are they better than k&n? I know k&n doesn't give you power gains, what about the fram?

I use the AC Delco..

paper filter makes more power than the K&N.. .I tested it on the dyno.. about 12 runs on jsut that test alone.. .. So in my mind. I am satisfied with that info..

Why would you? You spent good money on it.

I'm running the K&N filter on my car. I would definitely reccomend it over a paper filter.

Forget about fram.

I use Supertech, the are made by K&N and are $10 cheaper.

There have been many tests which show that NONE of the different filters make more horsepower than another. The problem with filters is the more dirt they trap the less air they flow and that causes horsepower losses. You cannot clean a paperfilter. You can use an airhose to blow out the big chunks of crap but you cannot blow one clean. This means you must replace it very regularly, not every 10,000 miles, if you are wanting maximum performance. A cleanable filter such as the K&N, Holley, and others can be cleaned, reoiled, and reused almost indefinitly. This means you can in effect have a new filter anytime you want one by just cleaning it which costs less than a dollar. I clean mine once a month. It's a lot cheaper than buying 12 new filters each year and I never have to worry about a power loss from a dirty filter.

Actually cleaned mine today. I clean it just about once a month give or take a week here and there. With the FRA, it gets pretty clogged up with crap, so whenever I start to actually notice a difference in how the car pulls, I clean the filter out.

actually frequent cleaning of k&n and others is defeating the purpose of buying one.as it gets more dirt on it it actually assists filtration.imo you dont need to clean them that often.the cleaning kit will even states so on the box.

This may be true...but you should see the amount of crap that builds up on my K&N in just a months time. I do a lot of highway driving and so much crap gets sucked into that filter cause of the FRA. I am in no way knocking the FRA by the way, definitely a very worthwhile mod.

It's the film of oil on the gauze material that actually "captures" the dirt particles. There is no way that adding dirt to a filter makes it more efficient. I think they are just trying to get you to buy their filter.

it says it on the cleaning kit box.theyre not saying a dirty filter makes anything better.theyre just pointing out that some dirt in the filter helps it filter better and not to alarmed by this.

a FRA or cold air mod will cause your filter to need more frequent cleaning due to sucking up more dirt.

I use both actually. You have to be careful with the K & N filters. Most people are very careless when using the K & Ns. I use the K&N all the time except when cleaning it. I use the Fram while cleaning the K&N, unit. Here is what I do:
I remove the K&N and replace it with the FRAM
I then set my K&N airfilter on two blocks outside in the gravel next to my driveway. I set the filter on the blocks so the blocks are only supporting the edges of the filter, exposing the entire filtering surface. I set the filter with the dirty side(side facing the ground when installed)down, just like if it was installed in the F-body Ls1 airbox. I then spray the cleaner GENEROUSLY all over the filter cloth. I let it sit for at least 20 minutes(not in the sunlight, you don't want it to dry). After it's sat for the aloowed time, I get my garden/car wash hose with a nossle that has a jet spray pattern and blast the filter as it's resting on the blocks. DO NOT TURN THE FILTER OVER AND SPRAY FROM THE OTHER SIDE! You may think be doing this you are getting more dirt out but you are only forcing the left over dirt deeper into the cotton filter material and will get that out. Only flush the dirt out rom the clean side(top side). If the water is really dirty coming from the filter as you are flushing it out; you may want to re-treat it with the cleaner(I apply it on both sides). Once I am satisfied I got as much dirt out as possible, I shake the filter to get as much water out as possible. Then I place the filter on a large, thick, stack of paper towels or a cotton towel and in the sun if possible. I let it dry like that for an entire day. If time doesn't allow to let it sit outside that long, then I put it in the garage and let it sit like that. I will let it sit overnight while I am using the FRAM(which by the way I can't tell a difference between the two). After the K&N is completely dry, I apply the oil. I only apply the oil from the dirty side and only enough to cover each pleet. Once I am sure it's treated fully then I let it sit overnight on the towels again; so any excess drips out. If oyu don't let this occur; the excess oil WILL ruin your MAF. Sure this is a pain in the *** but a couple days work is cheaper then a new MAF. If you get two K&N filters then you can rotate and always have a good one! The K&N filters instructions are fague and don't go into detail, but if you follow these instructions you will be good.
