First Mods for SS

I'm gonna get either a 00 or 02 SS M6 w/ 44k polly in a week (dealer said "low miles" on the O2 lol). I know that the 02 has a dif intake manifold so if I get the 00, I'm gonna switch it out. Is that that only dif b/ the 2 cars (options are EXACTLY the same and the 02 has an asking price of 1k higher-I dont really trust the dealer as much).

What would be the best mods I could do for about 1 grand and stay reliable? I'm talking quarter times w/ reliability. I don't want anything that will significantly reduce the car's reliability. I'm also not good w/ manuals yet b/c my 93 z28 was an auto so tranny mods might not be the best right off the bat.

I dont want to start a pissing war over brands here either. I was thinking of the following:

LS6 (or Holley) intake (if 00)-500
Hooker cat back -300
Air lid and other intake stuff X

MAYBE programmer soon after.
One of my buddies works at a race shop and is gonna cut me a deal on that stuff (+S&H).

This may be stupid but what is the LS1 edit?

Thanks for any help,
Ryan

To start....

Lid
Catback
cutout, if your catback sounds goo but doesnt flow that good
4.10 gears if M6
torque converter if its a A4
headers
nitrous...

that is all stuff you can do with out a lot of downtime, or tearing into the engine.

Don't worry about a hooker exhaust. The SS should come w/ an SLP set up. At least the 2 '00 SS's I'm looking at come with it.

Get the SLP blemished lid. Mine was $85 shipped to my door, and fits like a glove. Works great too. You buying a used car, so chances are it wont be a show car. Get the blem lid from SLP, you can barely see the blemish they are talking about.

I have a 2000 SS, so i have done some research on the differences between this year and others.

I believe the 2000 and earlier models have a more " aggressive" cam then the 01 and 02.
The 01 and 02 do have the ls6 manifold. A $500 mod.
Basically adding the manifold to an 00 will give you more power then a stock 02.

Ls1 edit is a computer program (need a laptop I believe) a great mod because you can do so much to tune your car and set it up how you want it. (the ls1 has a bunch of "hidden" power)

Lid, filter, CAI (together they really unleash some power)

exhaust it really depends on what you are looking for (sound , power)

I would start with some sub-frame connectors, a lid, and the cat-back of your liking if you don't already have an optional SLP exhaust. I would start relatively small. After these mods, you will be able to get a better feel for which direction you want to go with the car. Good luck!

Sorry-it's a 99 vs an 02.

I was looking at that blemished lid-looked fine to me

First thing should always be cat-back. Hooker is good. Ask around, many peeps have it

Second should be lid. IMO, TSP lids look the best. ALL lids offer about the same gains, yet TSP and Whisper claim more over the others. Stay away from the Direct-Flo, many peeps have fit problems with that one.

After those, it's all up to you. That should be around $500, or less. Other things to consider next are SFC's, STB, new shifter, LS6 intake (if '99), cutout, tranny and rear end oil change!!

SFC? STB? what does this stand for?

How do u like flowmaster? I had it on my 93 and replaced it w/ borla after about 2 years b/c it was ugly. I'm not gonna spend the bucks for borla this time. I can't imagine that one lid makes more than one or 2 hp over another lid.

Why do a rear end oil change so fast? To that red syn stuff??? What's the gain out of that and is it something that can be done w/o a shop easily?

SFC's = Sub Frame Connectors
STB = Strut Tower Brace

Don't get Flowmasters, my car sounds nice, but it's known that they don't flow that well. Thats why some call them chokemasters. I got my car used and they were already on there.

Do the tranny and read end oil change becuase it probably hasn't been done in quite awhile. It's very easy to do. For the tranny, just take out the drain plug, and drain the oil into a pan. You will need like a hand pump of some kind to pump the oil in, avaliable at most stores. This is the same with the rear end, except you need to remove the rear end cover to drain the fluid. Also you will need a new gasket and some gasket sealer. It's very easy.

I used Red Line D4 ATF for the tranny, and Red Line 75w-90 for the rear end. The M6's use ATF fluid, not sure why, so just a heads up. You will need 2 quarts for the rear and four for the tranny. This cost me around $60 for the oils, pump, and gasket. May be cheaper where you are.

The 02 got sold b4 i could see it and the 99 sux. It drives fine but both the power windows were broken. They didn't tell me about this b4 I called so I was pretty upset. The driver's side wouldn't go up or down and the pass side would fall when about half way down. So beware of the SS at Land Rover of Naperville!!!

I dont think I'm getting an LS1 anymore so this thread can die. I was supposed to get one from my parents for graduation (what they "got" for me) except I have to pay for it myself so idk what kind of graduation present that was. WEAK.

Thx for ppl's help anyways. Maybe I'll get one in like 4 years when I'm out of grad school and have money (and won't have to sacrifice food to get a car!).
