First Mod
First Mod
I plan on getting a camaro here in a couple of months, and i was wondering, what should be the first mod that I put on my car? Should it be exhaust, lid, what?

What year? And M6 (6-speed) or A4 (4-speed auto)??
As a rule, one of the 1st things that LS1 owners buy is an aftermarket air intake lid - LS1 Motorsports makes one, SLP makes one, MTI makes one, and there are others. The new lid will reduce the restriction of incoming air to the engine that the factory lid creates. As well, you can swap out the original paper filter for a K&N or a Holley Power-shot filter --- I can't say exactly how much, but they do help out.
Exhaust is the next easiest "noticeable gains" mod. There are a ton of aftermarket companies for exhaust systems: Borla, Corsa, SLP, ....................take your pick. Over stock you should boost RWHP by quite a bit. And, LS1's really seem to respond well to just about any little mod, even "free" mods, some of which are the FRA (Free Ram Air) which is cutting out the plastic piece directly below the air filter, or the TB Bypass (Throttle Body Bypass) which stops the flow of engine coolant through the throttle body to help keep the incoming air cooler and denser. Go to this site (installuniversity.com) for a whole list of stuff you can do.
Welcome to the board, and welcome to the obsession!!

Amen to what's been posted. Lid, catback, have a cutout installed if you want the ability to sound nasty and max the flow. I have an A4 with stock converter, and still have run 12's on street tires. New MT Streets (26x11.5x16 on T/A 16x8 rims) in the corner of the garage just begging for next weekend.....
Maybe a 12.75 if I can get the 60' down to 1.7? 1.6XX?????

if u have a cutout then why do u need a catback for more flow? i was thinking about cutouts as a cheaper option then a full exhaust but now idk.
BTW- when i get cutouts i'm also goin for headers
thanks u,
mike

So basically the first thing I need to do is install a new lid which will help stop the restriction of intake that the stock lid creates...and from there I could go with exhaust, etc.
What are the advantages of auto vs. manual?
Also, what type of exhaust shoudl I get? I've heard that ''true duals'' are the best type of exhaust, but i'd like to hear from one of you guys...and what company as well?
Thanks for all the great feedback.

M6 or A4?? ---> that question gets debated all the time
. First off, ignore all peer pressure toward M6. Sure, driving standard is a lot of fun - no question - but, what type of driving do you normally do, and do you have much experience driving standard?
Even if you don't, obviously you can learn. BUT, I would not pass up on a good car deal just because it wasn't the M6 (case in point: me!
). I've been driving for a few years, and driven standards quite a lot (my last car - '96 Sunfire - was a standard, and I drove it for over a year). Yes, it's fun sometimes rowwing through the gears, but if you hit stop-and-go traffic a lot, live in a "hilly" city, or do a lot of city driving, standards get to be a PITA (pain in the a$$). Autos are still a good option, and no matter what, whenever you push the gas, there will always be power right there at your feet, and you can't screw up a launch like you can with a stick!
Just food for thought
.
In regards to your question about exhaust, a lot of guys seem to like the SLP "Loudmouth" exhaust system. It's a 2 into 1 system, but pretty much all systems are for the 4th gen F-bodies unless you get a custom "true dual" system (which most people don't do). I'm not sure what the real issue is, but I think the pipes hang very low (especially on the driver's side) when running duals
, so that's why the Y-pipe systems are more common, because they tuck up nicer along the passenger's side of the car.
Well, any more questions, keep them coming!

So you suggest that if I live in a hilly city, or a city with lots of stop and go traffic to get an automatic transmission(a4), but if I live in a city other than that to get a manual transmisison (m6). Well, I live in Dallas, Texas...but the majority of my driving will be to school (early in the morning, not much traffic), after school (After sports practice...not much traffic), and on the weekends (not much traffic)...plus, all my friends are pushing for me to get a manual (they have a GTI, M3, 325, etc..). they claim that the car is not worth getting if you get it automatic. Well, im definetely leaning towards manual..I guess the only reason to choose otherwise would be the actualy conditions that I live in.
Ohter comparisons between m4 and a6 would be helpful.
Thanks for all the great feedback.

So right now it's looking to the point where my FIRST MOD should be a new lid, and my second mod should be an exhaust sytem (SLP is looking to be the best one)...for the exhaust system, I want it to be loud..but not annoying and stylish but not dazzling...any other suggestions in terms of a good performance as well for an exhaust sytem...company or type of system?
Thanks alot for all the great feedback.
