Re: Filter test

psycho..

if you are refering to your little "K&N filters rob hp compared to paper" crusade...
you're wrong...this test shows the opposite

"The Flow Restriction response curves for each filter have the same basic shape. However, note how the AC Filter, which passed the smallest amount of dirt and had the highest dirt capacity and efficiency, also had the highest relative restriction to flow. The less efficient filters correspondingly had less restriction to flow. This illustrates the apparent trade-offs between optimizing a filter for dirt capturing ability and maximum airflow.

now if you mean that they K&N filters dont clean the air as well...yes you were correct.

but i never really argued that.

Re: Filter test

next time you are on the dyno, try your aftermarket filter vs a paper one and tell me if you see any difference.. .I have.. many times.. so I will stand by my findings..

Re: Filter test

I was referring to the dirt capture. I found it to be informative post. I kinda figured logically that if K&Ns flow more air, they must flow a little more dirt.

Re: Filter test

i wonder if the results would be different if you had more mods.

Re: Filter test

how would mods make my car show different results? Say exhaust.. will that change the air coming in?
hmmm.. how about suspension? nope.. dont see any change possible there..
I tested this with the stock lid, mti lid, and a stealth lid..
I used no filter, stock filter, K&N filter and an Amsoil foam filter...

The test was done with no cool down allowed..
The test was done twice on two different days.. I got the same results both days... I had rented the dyno for one series of tests (which also included a before complete fluid change to see if fluids would do anything..) and then a board member from here contacted me and we did it again..
Same results..

My car bone stock is now producing 320rwhp and 337rwtq.. its no slouch and it seems to breathe just fine..

Re: Filter test

If you read on in the report, it mentioned something very interesting. It says that the aftermarket filters do flow better, but is this flow needed? If a paper filter, which is more restrictive, can supply all the air that is needed to engine then there would be no gain using the after market. I sure there is a point where a K&N, which is less restrictive, can supply more air to an engine maybe needed, but does anyone know where this point is? My guess is after a lid, catback and headers. What do yall think? I have no data to prove or disprove this.

Re: Filter test

most of the people in my circle have fairly powerful 10-9sec cars and they all agree.. paper filter.

I just post the info I have gained to help others.. after that, do with it what you like!

Re: Filter test

LOL unless you're making making upwards of 1000hp, the difference in HP between paper filter and a K&N is never going to be much.

lol free ram air mod is more likely to show gains on the dyno than an air filter.
