Exhaust ???

I have a 98 Z28. I was thinking about getting a differnt exhaust the stock one is just to quite. At first i was thinking about getting a slp loudmoth exhaust but i really want to save money. I was thinking about straight pipping it but I was wondering if it might be to loud. What if i replaced the muffler with a resonator how would that work. I was also wondering what would happen to the performance. If anybody has some info please let me know thanks.

Re: Exhaust ???

It all depends on how much $$$ you want to spend. I have the Borla, and am very pleased with it, but it was $700. There are less expensive ones i.e. flowmaster, corsa, etc.

Re: Exhaust ???

if you want the sound of a straight pipe, but worry about the noise.

get a cutout...manual or electric

that way you can open the exhaust and have a VERY muscular sound and about 10hp gain, but cap it when you need to.

$30 for the C/O and maybe $50 to install it

Re: Exhaust ???

You can run a bullet or chambered stick in your factory I and delete the stock muffler.
This or the cutout will give HP over a stock system.

Re: Exhaust ???

If your gonna spend an insane amount of money on a stainless steel system then get GMMG. For more of a budge id look at SLP loudmouth or the new LM 2 with the muffler. The LM 2 will not be as raspy and might be a little quieter at idle, but will still be loud as **** when you open it up. Dont get a cutout, its not gonna be a sound your probably gonna like.

You could go the Dynomouth route. I'm very happy with mine. You buy a 18" Dynomax bullet race muffler for about $40 + shipping. Then you take it to a muffler shop that doesn't mind doing a little custom work (shouldn't be hard to find one). They will cut out and discard your stock muffler. Then they will fab some regular pipes to go where the muffler used to be. Then they install the 18" bullet muffler in the I-pipe just behind the rear axel. That should cost you about $100. So for about $150 you'll have a very nice sound and about 10 rwhp gain. As long as you keep your cats there won't be any problems with drone or local police.

Or you could go with a cutout. Hooker catback can be had for about $300 and is a decent sound. But I love my dynomouth and highly recommend it to others who have stock manifold and cats.

Good Luck

Re: Exhaust ???

This is a very heated subject, people are as loyal to their exhaust as they are to their brand of car.

Exhaust is not near as heated of a debate as F-body vs Mustang, A4 vs M6 and my favorite LT1 vs LS1. Besides he was looking for the most cost effective not so much the best sound. Anyone with money to spend should consider true duals or GMMG but for the tight budgets we have hooker, tsp rumbler/loudmouth, dynomouth and the classic cutout.

But that sound clip page is awesome. I used it when I was exhaust shopping and it helped me decide against a few catbacks I was considering.

Re: Exhaust ???

I personally dislike the generic sound of the GMMG.

Re: Exhaust ???

i like Random Tech. I don't think they are given the credit they deserve from their cat back systems. I have one, and it sounds fantastic.

Re: Exhaust ???

Don't know if your interested or not but I just took my SLP dual-dual off my car. I am selling it for $175 + shipping. Its got 30K miles on it, comes with a magnaflow muffler and a flowtech cut-out. Sorry to hi-jack the thread.

Re: Exhaust ???

What is the pipe size on the stock exhaust on a 98 z28. For the dynomax bullet racing muffler what size would you need to get.
