excessive spark knock
excessive spark knock
friend has a 2002 camaro ss m6 this thing clatters like no other. the car has 48,xxx miles on it he bought it used.he has tried fuel from all over and octane boosters some help but still clatters.also bought a predator tuner and still no resolve.is this common among these cars is thre a quick fix ,anybody else heard of this??
sounds like piston slap to me...
when does it occur? idle? WOT? does it change with engine rpm?
could be a bent pushrod as well from over-reving it or a broken valve spring.
any mods on it??

I agree with teke...take a peak under the valve covers. GM was somewhat conservative with the spark advance on the '01~'02 f-bodies. There's also a back-up spark table that the PCM will transition to in the event that KR is consistently detected. It will essentially pull a butt-load of timing to make it go away.
it only does it under hard throttle like getting on the highway and it gets worse when u shift from 1 to 2 and tire spin occurs!!! no big mods on this car just filter, air foil , and a lid!!!!!
oil pump went out the same day he bought the car .has about 55 # cruising now only does it from about 4200 and up wot not part throttle . clatter gets worse under tire spin it acts like it keeps adding timing instead of taking it out
and you're sure it's engine...not drivetrain??
cause what does tire spin have to do with air/fuel???
detonation that bad should be compensated for by the engine...let alone all the gas related things you've tried.
i don't think it is spark

If he lost the oil pump the day he bought it, there's a good chance there's some mechanical issues that need tending to in the engine. A lightly modded car like that should be absolutely fine running on the stock tune. Aside from internals, you can do the common tune up things like change the plugs, fuel filter, clean the MAF leads, etc. But IMO, I'd check under the valve covers before I got on it hard again. The PCM won't add timing. It'll only take it away until no more knock is detected. Then it'll restore it to the original point.
Like SSpdDmon said, if it is real spark knock then the comp will pull timing until it goes away. If it's not going away it could be that it's a simular sound that is being caused by the drivetrain. Something with the clutch maybe?
