Engine Cuts at 120

So I had some open highway last night and I decide to open it up and see how it goes.. Once I hit about 120 the engine starts surging like it is speed limited.. I thought the speed limiter was set higher than that??

If your car didn't come with the Z-rated tire option then I believe the speed limiter was set to 120mph.

Re: Engine Cuts at 120

Z28s are speed limited at 120 due to the 16 inch tires that are not Z speed rated.

Wrong, you could indeed get a z-rated 16in tire option on the Z28. They came with P245/50/ZR16 Good Year GSC's. Those cars were not speed limited to 120mph. The cars that were came with A P235 series tire, they were Good Year RSA's.....they were not z-rated.

I believe it had something to do with the gear ratio. The auto cars with 2.73's were speed limited, where as the auto cars with 3.23's got the z-rated and the 6 speed cars also got the z-rated

Re: Engine Cuts at 120

Any idea what someone would charge to program the pcm to remove that?

A hypertech programmer can do it, but that and gears are about the only things its good for, unless you have an A4 then you can change shift firmness and shift points.

Definitely... Step Dad manages a tire store, so I get tires at cost, typically half what you would pay retail.. So Tires are on the agenda...

I bought my car used, but it had 245/50/16 and 3.23 gears. So far she has been up to 140 w/ no mods to the computer.
