Emissions Question

In Idaho, when I get my z28 tested for emissions, the attendant plugs in a device to the connector just beneath the steering wheel, lets the car idle for a minute then unplugs, I give him $15 and drive away ... My question ... do I need catalytic converters for my car to pass emissions (in Idaho) or will O2 simulators do? An explanation of how oxygen simulators work and what data is read when the emissions tester plugs in would also help .. I'm looking to get headers, and either a new ypipe or go true duals w/bullet mufflers, depending on whether or not I have to buy cats .. cost is an issue. Oh and a couple more minor questions. Correct me if I'm wrong but the intermediate pipe is 3" in radius right? And does anyone swear by a set of cheap high flow cats or will any high flow cat(s) do? Thanks for the help.

It sounds like they test you there like they do in Chicago. If you are not throwing any codes then you are good to go, but if you are then you get the sniff test.

O2 sims send the computer exactly the same info that the O2 sensors do. That's how they work. So they would be completely transparent to your type of emissions testing.

Hey since you're in boise I thought I'd ask a question. Do you know when the track opens (firebird raceway)?

Memphis is scheduled to go to the OBDII testing in the near future. You can bet your butt that as soon as they do that ... LTs are going on the car! :-)
