Dyno tune expectations
Dyno tune expectations
Can a stock / very lightly modded LS1 benefit much from a dyno tune? I just have a catback and a lid.
I'm mostly just curious. I'd like to know how much power and torque I'm putting to the ground (not just an approximation - I'm guessing 300-310hp), and I figure if I'm taking the time and money to get the car up on a dyno, I might as well get it tuned at the same time.
Are there any drawbacks to getting tuned?
I'm in Michigan, east of Lansing. The guys at Victory Racing can do dyno tunes, right? If I do this, I'm pretty sure I'd go to them first. I hear really good things about their shop from the guys on this board.

Drawbacks: The cost for a dyno tune on a stock car only to gain maybe 10 hp. You'd gain more for your money at this point with other mods.

My friend had to drop $400 for a dyno tune after his header install.
I'm waiting to install headers and a cam at the same time so I wouldn't have had to spend the money for another tune if I didn't do both mods at the same time.
Re: Dyno tune expectations
You can however spend $250 for a mail order tune and see that same approximate gain and then any additional tune is $50 (plus shipping). It won't be as dead on as a dyno tune.
Re: Dyno tune expectations
Tunes are great, it's not all about power, the car is made more efficient. I got tuned last week and the car feels smoother all around and i get better gas mileage. I'd recommend a tune for everyone!

Tune it stock? Tune again with basic bolts on? Tune it again with headers? Tune it again with a cam? Tune it again with heads?
Re: Dyno tune expectations
That's basically the response I was expecting: A few horsepower, a little efficiency. Not really worth it until I get some better mods under the hood.
I gather that headers and cam will show lots of extra benefit if done in conjunction with a tune. What other mod fall under that category?

Re: Dyno tune expectations
besides, after some mods you will have to have it retuned or adjusted anyway. i.e- bigger injectors, idle, etc, after you get something like a h/c setup or any severe gain. so save the money on the tune and get a cam. ive had bad luck with my engine but some on here see over 400rwhp with just a cam.
