Dyno Depression what gives (low dyno numbers)

Well I finally got my car chasis dyno'd on a superflow dyno. I have to admit I thought the numbers would be a bit higher what gives? I put down 292.9rwhp and 320tq Am I just expecting to much or not? My engine mods are .........

Flowtech Long Tube Headers & Dumped True Dual Exhaust
2.5" x-pipe, 2-24" Sweet Thunder Chambered mufflers
Whisper Lid / K&N Filter / Smooth Bellows
Hypertech PPIII & 160 thermo

Also No a/f because they couldn't hook up the sniffer with my dumped exhaust. He said it would be too close to the rear tire. It did puff an *** load of black smoke when he got off the gas.

Try putting back the stock tune on it, the hypertech programming may be causing knock retard.

It also sounds like you're running really rich.

I put down 315/298 bone stock and am planning true duals with over the axle, I'd hate to see mine go down.

i hear also if you have like 3.73 or 4.10 gear ratios you dyno lower... maybe it is a myth??? but i am not sure, it is just what i thought

ohh damn, and what i didnt notice too is you have an A4.... makes you dyno #s lower since you looser more hp due to your drivetrain

and your under the hood pics/ inside car ones are amazing!!!

Take the HPP tune out.

I still wouldn't expect huge numbers because you're dealing with an automatic car. Stick a nice Yank 3500 in that baby and some Nittos and RWHP won't mean alot when you're pulling most cars on the steet out of the hole.

I know someone with a 99 z28 auto that just pulled 340/330 this winter with lt's to cats to 3 inch, lid on the stock tune. I really think you should get the stock tune back in there, the hypertech is a shot in the dark as far as tunes go and ls1's have been known as freak engines that do anywhere from 280-320 in stock form so no hypertech tune will cover that amount of variance.

340.... that is quite possibly the most insane numbers i have ever heard...i hope i dyno like that and for a typical A4 it is ~300rwhp most prolly hit just a bit less than that mark... 340 is not normal at all

Re: Dyno Depression what gives (low dyno numbers)

Several things comes to mind.
1. Most people use a Dynojet, not a Superflo. If its like a Mustang it'll dyno much lower than on a Dynojet.

2. Maybe there was something up with the dyno and not your car.

3. You can't really compare your numbers on one dyno to someone else's or even your own car's numbers on a different dyno. Not even if they're both the same brand of dyno. I've talked to people who have gained 15hp just from dynoing at a different shop. Both shops have dynojets.

4. Dyno numbers are just for bragging or seeing the effects of a mod. We're not ricers here. A dyno is a TUNING TOOL. If you want to see what your car can do, go to a track.

Thx for all the input guys. Hopefully I can find my hypercrap tuner. What the hell do I do if I cant find my HPPIII? How can I tune is back to stock. I am planning on getting a VINCI handheld.

I know a M6 with your mods should be in the 330 to 340 range. I guess you're right around the corner, Maybe check plugs, wires, fuel delivery system? Usually something stupid that causes these troubles.

Again, this would depend on the car and the dyno. More realistically, I'd say 320-330 it being a 99 w/no LS6 intake etc on a Dynojet. If it was at 290 in the beginning, 320 is still a good 30 whp gain from these few mods.

Bingo.........AFAIK a Superflow is an Eddy current load cell dyno like a Mustang dyno and it will show 8-10% lower numbers.

But like said don't let dyno numbers worry you. I had mine on a dyno once when it had a lid and Loudmouth. It pulled a whopping 312 hp. But it ran a best of 12.15 @ 110 mph in that trim.

Also, not many people get on the internet to brag about poor dyno results. I'd suspect that we only hear about the strong cars that dyno well. For instance, I didn't brag about my combination and RWHP on my '98. With a full exhaust, Spec Stage III, lid, tune, and a tune-up (fresh plugs, wires & filters), with my cut-out open I put down 313 RWHP on a dynojet.

Like it's already been said, I'm sure there are plenty 285 rwhp cars that could kick my car's automotive butt, and plenty of cars that make more power than I do who's butt I could hand to them. The numbers don't mean much with all the other factors that make a car fast or slow.
