Dumb question about thermostats
Dumb question about thermostats
Hey guys, i was consideirng a 160 thermostat, but i noticed everywhere that sells them has the neck included with it, what if i dont want to change the neck, cant you take the new thermostat and install it in the old neck? Thanks
Re: Dumb question about thermostats
NOPE....it's all one unit
it's well worth it, keeps the engine cooler. and don't get fooled by people telling you that it won't make a difference without reprogramming the fans. it's not true.
you'll benefit from the stat in everyday driving. the only time the fan setting change will help is in heavy traffic where the few hp gained doesn't really matter, and at the track...where a simple fan switch will do a better job.
check out www.installuniversity.com or www.ls1howto.com for a way to turn your stock stat into a 160 stat for a few bucks.

Re: Dumb question about thermostats
Teke thanks for the reply, i noticed where jegs has an SLP 160 thermostat for $24.00 it says is for the LS1. That compared to $50.00 for the one with the filler neck. Is the unit really all one piece of can you just pull the thermostat out and swap it.

A cooler engine, albeit with less horsepower, will however be less likely to break things.
This is leaving out any arguments regarding timing or octane. It really all depends on what temperature range the engine is designed to run and make the most power at.
Re: Dumb question about thermostats
actually a cooler engine runs more efficiently, within a specific heat range. obviously a cold engine doesn't run well, neither does a hot engine.
manufacturers have the engine designed to run higher than optimum in order to keep low emissions and maintain proper heat and warm up for colder climates. realize they have to designe the car to function well for people in sub-zero climates as well as hot sub-tropic areas.
a hotter spark allows for faster more efficient fuel/air mixture burn, but too much heat from the engine block can cause the mixture to ignite prematurely...detonation. hotter fire yes...hotter engine NO.
as for the $25 unit in jegs....never seen it
make sure it's for an ls1.
and no the neck/stat is one piece...it can't be easily separated and replaced. don't you suppose they would have figured that out iin the 8yrs since the LS1 was introduced?

Re: Dumb question about thermostats
I need a Dyno? It's pretty common knowledge that any or should I say most OBD vehicles run there best at around 195-200 degrees. It's all about open and closed loop.
Like stated above a cooler intake charge will produce more power a cooler engine will just well, run cooler. Most likely not reaching a temp. where it isn't running rich as hell.

Re: Dumb question about thermostats
Maybe we are overlooking something here, Codyss, where are you from? Down here in the heat w/ all you northerners comeing here and causing bad traffic jams, we need to keep as cool as we can.

"most OBD vehicles run there best at around 195-200 degrees"
well here in south florida, my past 2 cars with 160 stats run about 172-175 on the highway and around town (light traffic)...so you can't tell me that 20 deg is gonna hurt the engine.
and realize...just because the COOLANT is 175* doesn't mean the BLOCK is.
open/closed loop is triggered by several factors, temp being one. but ANY engine will reach that temp...no matter what stat you put in it...or if you even run one. i think the temp is something like 150*....so there is no problem there.
