Question Driving with nails in my tires

This is why you don't let anyone else drive your car....

I got my tires rotated and balanced today and the guy told me I have 2 nails in two of my tires (from when my husband ran over some nails in the road) but they aren't causing any leaks. Add to that, he got the wrong size tire that I've been driving around on for a few months that I never noticed. 235/45/17 on one and 255/45/17 on the other three.
Now I'm supposed to drive to Oklahoma, which is 700 miles away, on Wednesday. Is driving that far, with nails in my tires and having a different size tire, a really horrible idea? Yes, I plan on getting it fixed as soon as possible but getting to Oklahoma is my #1 priority now.

I've been driving with nails in them for less than 2 months. I'm not sure how many miles...

Why didn't you get rid of the nails right then and there??? Or did you not get the work done in a tire shop, or something...?

In any case, if I would be planning on making a 1400 mile road trip, you bet your behind that I'd get each and every nail out of my tires! Especially if I knew about them!!!

Tire size? If you haven't noticed anything by now, you probably won't notice anything different on your trip, either.

IMO, you should put the different size tire to the front so the different overall diameter compared to the otehr rear tire doesn't screw up anything in your rear end, i.e. just like w/the donut spare.

Good luck!

Goto goodyear and have them patch the tires. Its usually about 16 bucks a tire. If you haven't been loosing air pressure in the tires, then most likely the nails didn't go all the way through. Also, if you've been driving for 2 months on the different size tires, you should be ok when you get the nails out.

Ok, well nevermind...they did take them out.

And yes, the tire is on the front driver's side. So it should be ok to drive on?

Yup. But try to get a correct size tire asap, though.

The tire situation should be fine for the trip. My REAL concern would be going to Oklahoma in the first place. But who am I to talk, OU seems to have our (UT's) number in football so I'm a little biased. All I know is that even after loosing to OU I can take comfort in the fact that I don't have to go to Oklahoma. Seriously, you should be fine. Good luck

Off topic for a second:

Just going for a visit. But where in San Antonio are you from? I used to live on the NE side, near Walzem.

Dave, thanks for your super terrific smart advice.

I grew up in Spring Branch (just north of SA by Bulverde - not the Spring Branch by Houston). Went to UT Austin then came back when I graduated - so actually I live in Spring Branch but its practically a suburb of SA now so I just put SA. Good thing for you Oklahoma won't be a permanent address.

Nope. And no one else who has driven it has noticed either. *shrug* Even now that I know it's on there...I don't really notice a difference.

Did your husband get all four tires one once? Or did he just buy one? The reason I ask is b/c he might of got the right tire but the tire shop installed the wrong one. Might want to look into that. I used to work at pepboys and it happed a few times.

You should be fine driving on that tire but I would change it.
