Question Donaldson vs K&N

Picked up the SLP high Flow Lid..... Came with a Donaldson air filter but I hear K and N is better especially if I do the "Free Ram Air" mod. Is the K&N filter for my 2001 SS..... #- 33-2118?

Thanks

well, today I just did a dyno comparison of the Amsoil Air Filter, the K&N Air Filter and the Stock paper air Filter on a dyno..

the info will be up shortly (working on the page)

but to keep you from all the suspense.. I will be running the paper filter.

I read a lot of bad things about K&Ns not sealing right with lids. I already had a K&N in my car when I got it. I purchased my lid with a Holley filter. Put the lid on and sure enough, the Holley sealed better than the K&N. Granted they both sealed (I think), the Holley seemed to have the better and tighter fit. It was almost like I had to place the K&N in an exact spot then close the lid. The Holley just went right in.

This is just one case though. Many others have had no problems with K&Ns. Do I think Holley is a better for filtering purposes? No. Is K&N better? No. I think they're the same. I do like the Holley's blue color better than the K&N's red orange color though. I don't like having a paper filter too much, would rather have one I can clean. Just preference.

Filters

Donaldson filters actually have the potential to flow more air than any other filter medium I have come across.
Donaldson got to be really well known for devising a filter for helicopters during desert storm. No other filter made would hold up to the sand being sucked in by the big chopper turbines.
Donaldson also makes the famed "Blackwing" intake for the C5 Vette.
Does the flow differeance between a K&N vs Holley vs Donaldson really make a difference - probably not on a street car.
In other words, you're Donaldson is more than adiquate, no need to change it

Both Donaldson and Gore (Gore-Tex) are the major suppliers to the computer Disk Drive industry, producing recirculation and breather filters for products that operate under conditions cleaner than an operating room.

Just an FYI, Danaldson is an established, reputable supplier if filtration products. I personally have not seen any of their automotive products yet.

I have and they are a good product. We used to use them exclusivley on our fleet of garbage trucks. We dont now because of pricing and distrubutor problems in Florida.

Anybody have any track numbers on the lids. Or dyno results with just the lid changes. Its really the only mod I want to try while the car is still under warrenty.

Well, if you are just talking about a standard lid such as MTI, SLP, Whisper, GMS, or LS1 Motorsports then they are supposed to all be pretty much the same.

Now, as you may have seen, I did some dyno pulls to check out the difference.. What I found was that the MTI lid witht he paper filter made more power... ON A DYNO.. I will do the same tests at the track when I get back from a road trip.
I will say that I have found power to be smoother with the MTI lid.

If you can wait a little bit, I will post track info of the differences... But I really am not expecting much... and I doubt that they really will show much at a track when there are way more variables such as launch and whatnot that have to be taken into consideration..
