Red face Do you guys run stock tires at the track?? you have to read this...

I took my new z28 down to the track in Bradenton speedway this past weekend I had my stock tires Goodyear 245/50/16 ZR, I got to the the stage lite and got my RPM up to 2,000 when the lite turn green I got into it, well I sat their and smoked them got off the gas got back into it hit 2nd and loss control did a 360 and came about 2feet from the guard rale. I corrected and ran a 1/4 mile in 39.9secs I think even an import could not beat that. So the next time I didn't rise my rpms and left the lite and still smoked the tires some hit second and had to get off the gas again got back into it and still out ran the cobra with a 14.59 to his 14.95 @100mph, now do you guys run streetdrags or full slicks because if your runing a stick you have to be where i am, which is going nowhere. also do you think with 60foot time 2.60 could if i were to hook up run low 13?? And does anyone know of a good tire for the street and the strip??

I had crappy Good Year RSA's on my '97 Z28 and even with 4.10 gears and normal PSI I was still able to pull a 2.00 60ft time. I don't think I 2.6 is gonna put you near a 13sec time slip.

Two things;
-Your track prep sucks
-You need to practice take-offs
I run crappy tires on my Z and. They are so bad that they don't even have a brand name, they're so generic, they are just "tires".They aren't even H speed rated.I average a 2.0 60'.It's also a lot easier to drive an auto than a stick. All I can say is practice, practice, practice.ANd you need to FEATHER the throttle off the line and not floor it so hard If not, you'll end up in the wall Good luck.

i can pull 2.2 60fts on the street tires, what i do is hold it at 1700, drop the clutch WITHOUT PUTTING ANYMORE THROTTLE INTO IT until the car is rolling ,(punch it when the rpms fall down to 1200 or so) and that should get you close, dont use the traction control either. practice, practice, practice. but if the track isn't prepped that could be a big prob too, especially if all them f***ing imports track water to the line.

Sounds like you've definitely got traction problems!! 2.6 60' times are pretty slow for LS1 cars (even LT1 cars can run around 2.2's stock).

IMO though, the factory tires (Goodyear Eagle GSA's on mine anyway) are crap. I just took my car to the track for the first time last friday night, and I was very dissappointed in the traction I got (even though I did manage 60' times between 2.1's and 2.3's) I felt like my car just wanted to spin all the way through 1st gear (and I've got 2.73's?! ).

Hopefully you can sort out the tire problem --- sorry I can't suggest anything --- I'm not too sure about what the best tires are myself either!

if you car is stock and it has no major power adders than you should seriously work on your driving. theres no reason for doing 360s when shifting to second if youre stock.

The problem here is that he doesn't know what he's doing, at all. The object is to try to launch your car with ZERO tire spin. Quit trying to run a 1.5 60' time in your car, its not going to happen. Slow it down some off the line, take your respectable 2.2 60' and keep everybody else safe.. Geez.

I'm surprised you weren't kicked of the track for that stunt. No harm, no foul. I cut a 2.073 60'on street tires. 13.6 at 1320'. I've got an auto, so I cheated. It can be done though. Practice.

Let me get this straight? You did a 360 on the track? Then, your next run you almost lost it again? And the safety official didn't say anything? He didn't ask you to leave?

I've got generic "house brand" tires on my car. Defender ZR, made by Michelin. They aren't great, but they aren't too bad.

I get just a slight bit of wheel-spin when I launch, and only enough to barely chirp the tires before they hook and I'm gone!

Your tires aren't your problem. Either your track sucks (did anyone else have problems launching from your lane?) or your driving skills need a little work.

Practice your launch at every red light. No need to wind out and powershift 2nd or anything .... just practice your launch from a dead stop.

If you don't do 360's when you drive on the street, there's no reason why you should have lost it on the track.

Practice, practice, practice, practice ... every chance you get.

Talking

When looking for new tires, I suggest some with a UTAQ rating of 180 or less. My last Z had Yokohama AVS Intermediates. They were wonderful and gave me 1.9's. Verys oft everyday tire that wont last super long but they were only $89 when I bought them.

I hate Kumhos. They sucked very badly. Pirelli P-Zeros are great but not for the price. I think I will try the Nittos next.

I would buy the Yokohamas if I could find them again! (I bought about 8 of them within a 3 year period..)

Most people run Nitto Drag Radials for the street and the strip. But how are the BFGs?

Dude ... you need to find someone at the track who has experience with f-bod 6 speeds. Then have a long talk with that person.

Unless they prepped the track with vasoline, no track could possibly be that bad. It may also be that you're simply one of those people that shouldn't be on the track or otherwise racing your car.

Good Luck.
