Do all ls1 cars come wth an aluminum driveshaft?

Someone told me that not all ls1 cars have an aluminum driveshaft. Is this true?

That's true. The 2.73 A4 cars have steel driveshafts; all other LS1s have aluminum driveshafts.

Ditto. I've got a steel driveshaft, and note: "A4 w/2.73's".

Yeah I will have to agree too, but why is that the A4 with the 2.73's have a steel driveshaft? And the 3.23's and the 3.42's have a aluminum driveshaft?

False. My 1998 Z28 came with the steel driveshaft, and still has it to this day. I believe it came as a result of having the factory appearance package, which came with non-speed-rated tires & chrome wheels.

With the 2.73 gears the drive shaft RPM is significantly lower at any given speed. No need for the lighter shaft.

Those options have nothing to do with the driveshaft. How do you know it is steel? Maybe the previous owner changed it. An M6 does not come with Steel from the factory, unless someone screwed up on the assembly line.

WTF? I am the original owner. I can tell by the sound it makes when you tap against it, also by the discoloration. I've never complained about the driveshaft to the dealer so they should not have replaced it. I guess RobVas must've had the sheets pulled over him as well.

mine *had* that POS aluminum ds it broke on racing on the street, with street tires, in a totally stock car. The damn thing looked like it was spot welded together and still had the lovely Three Rivers GM sticker on it.

My 2001 M6/3.42 had a steel driveshaft and did NOT have the speed rated tires (Eagle GA, yech!).

From what I understand, the steel driveshaft came with cars not equipped with the speed rated tires and also have speed limiters in them as a result. Anybody?

I previously had a 1995 TA which came with the A4/2.73 combo, and it had a steel driveshaft. I took in a huge list of TSB's right before it went out of warranty and they upgraded it to the aluminum version. But it came with speed-rated tires. I don't see a good litmus test yet.
